Henry Moore
Henry Spencer Moore OM CH FBA è stato un artista inglese. È conosciuto soprattutto per le sue sculture monumentali semi-astratte in bronzo , che si trovano in tutto il mondo come opere d'arte pubbliche. Oltre alle sculture, Moore ha prodotto molti disegni, tra cui una serie che ritrae i londinesi che si riparano dal Blitz durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, oltre ad altre stampe e opere grafiche su carta.
Le sue forme sono solitamente astrazioni della figura umana, in genere raffiguranti madri e figli o figure reclinate. Le opere di Moore sono solitamente evocative del corpo femminile, a parte una fase degli anni '50 in cui scolpì gruppi familiari. Le sue forme sono generalmente forate o contengono spazi vuoti. Molti interpreti paragonano la forma ondulata delle sue figure reclinate al paesaggio e alle colline della sua città natale, lo Yorkshire.
Moore divenne famoso grazie alle sue sculture in marmo scolpito e alle sculture astratte in bronzo di grandi dimensioni e fu determinante nell'introduzione di una particolare forma di modernismo nel Regno Unito. In seguito, la sua capacità di realizzare commissioni su larga scala lo rese eccezionalmente ricco. Nonostante ciò, visse in modo frugale; la maggior parte del denaro che guadagnò fu destinato alla fondazione Henry Moore Foundation, che continua a sostenere l'istruzione e la promozione delle arti.
