John James Audubon
Original Audubon Butcher Bird, 1836 edition. Bright colour from Birds of America

1836

Informazioni sull’articolo

The oeuvre belongs to the series The Birds of America, published between 1822 and 1837. It was designed by John James Audubon and engraved, printed, and coloured by R. Havell in 1834. The suite, consisting of 435 plates, represents a monumental effort in art history. It stands as a testament to human fascination with the natural world and the meticulous dedication of its creator, John James Audubon. This series is of unparalleled importance in depicting animals in art. J. J. Audubon is credited with capturing almost every bird species known in the New World and creating the most spectacular collection of plates ever devoted to birds. The monumentality of his plates was a determining factor in the decorative rendering of the works. John James Audubon was a man of many identities, each contributing to his unique perspective as an artist. He was an artist, naturalist, woodsman, adventurer, storyteller, and mythmaker. His legendary status as a painter who travelled around North America in the early 19th century, undertaking the massive task of documenting the continent's avian diversity, is a testament to his multifaceted personality. The fruit of his extraordinary work is preserved at the National Audubon Society, and several birds bear his name. About our proof: excellent proof in fresh and brilliant colours, printed on paper with a watermark J Whatman 1834, is typical. Two 9—and 40-mm tears on the left edge were well restored. In addition, the lower right corner is chipped. Otherwise, preservation is excellent.
