Modern Mountain Ski Tower Retreat
The Design team was commissioned to create a second home for the ski slopes of Deer Valley, Utah by combining two midrise tower units that would evoke a warm yet sophisticated environment.
To meet their directive, the design team used clean large-scale forms in bold tones of black, forest greens, mountain blue skies with a background of natural materials.
The two stacked units were combined with a steel and glass central staircase and united in materiality that included black streamlined modern cabinetry, ivory wide-planked ceruse oak flooring and the warmth of rich walnut in a narrow-slatted ceilings.
The walnut is also repeated in paneling to enhance the architectural interior massing and add verticality by using a bespoke pyramid-shaped detail that expands the space upwards. The kitchen is simplified with blended black perimeter cabinetry and black leathered granite countertops as a background for the strong organic movement of the island granite. The lower floor includes and après ski area with a deep bittersweet Mohair sectional and leather tiled walls repeating black and deep ivory in a vertical graphic pattern for game playing and movie watching.
Subtle innuendos are made to the natural forms found in this mountain terrain. For example, the bronze Henge light fixture over the dining table evokes the feeling of collecting under tree branches in the most sophisticated iteration. The coffee table by Stephan Bishop is an ensemble of a staggered slice tree trunk. The curation of furnishings for a modern but bold simplicity is well exampled in the primary bedroom composition of the generous scaled bed that plays with its proportions of massing, against a black gauze wall texture and a striking abstract expressionism art piece.
