Scent and Beauty Department at Fortnum & Mason

Retail di Waldo Works Studio a London, GB

Around 8,000 sq ft and covering almost the whole of the second floor, the space is organized in five main areas: The Scent Room, The Perfume Hall, Bath and Body, Beauty and Nightwear.

Throughout, illustration is used, taking inspiration from Fortnum & Mason’s archives. A full height glass screen is hand-illustrated with an archive Edward Bawden Valentine’s card produced for Fortnum & Mason, while contemporary illustrations and hand painted signage reinforce this much-loved heritage.

Carefully curated, the architecture instills clarity to the space, and the studio took particular attention to the cabinetry, proportion and detailing. Wall paneling and details are designed on three principles; bevel - like the cut glass of a fragrance bottle, mould – reeded and shadowed like a stamped beauty compact, and plane – clean and crisp with glass-like quality. The palette is varies through each room, from whites and gold like tinctures and oils to nudes and rose tones, to powdery hues.
