Verdugo Mountains Retreat

Family Home di Sarah Barnard Design a Glendale, CA

Nestled in the Verdugo Mountains, this ranch-style home embraces biophilic design, reflecting a connection between indoor and outdoor environments while blending sustainable practices with nature-inspired aesthetics.

The living room, with large windows framing succulents, cacti, and mountain views, features a mix of modern and vintage furniture. Restored antiques infuse the space with pieces of personal historical significance. The living room flooring, which continues throughout the home, is porcelain tile designed to resemble White Oak. This tile harmonizes with the surrounding woodlands while serving as a low-impact, durable alternative that’s easy to maintain.

In the dining area, a restored heirloom mahogany table pairs with a Scandinavian-inspired chandelier. Plants like fiddle leaf figs and a mid-century yellow ceramic dish bring warmth and vitality to the space.

The kitchen’s black-green cabinets with brass hardware reflect a woodland aesthetic. Quartzite countertops and an earthy backsplash highlight the palette, while a touchless faucet enhances functionality.

A custom mosaic floor in the entryway echoes the mountain views, using hand-pieced wood-like porcelain tiles. A hand-blown glass pendant light resembling a dew drop and a vintage hall tree with nature-inspired artifacts enrich the space. Deep black-green trim and hallway walls create a soothing, cohesive tone throughout.

The primary bedroom combines Gardenia walls with black-green trim, dusty rose linens, and live-edge walnut furniture for a serene retreat. A cloud-like glass light fixture and pink garden chairs visible through sliding doors enhance the connection between indoors and out.

The home office, overlooking a lush backyard, features warm tones and mid-century furniture. Butterfly stickers on windows prevent bird strikes, supporting local wildlife. Linen curtains in the gym and the bathroom’s repurposed charcoal gray vanity with leaf-shaped hardware continue the biophilic theme.
