Pencil Signed Abstract Geometric Graphic Design Lithograph Print, Bauhaus Artist
Located in Surfside, FL
M. Peter Piening was born on March 14, 1908 in Grabow, Germany. He began his education at a private school in Italy, studied at the Jesuit school of Kloster Ettal in Bavaria, and attended the German Stettin Gymnasium, where he graduated in 1926. Between 1926 and 1928 Piening studied design at the Bauhaus in Dessau, Germany. There he was taught by multiple famous twentieth-century artists, including Joseph Albers, Paul Klee and Mies van der Rohe. After receiving his master’s degree from the Bauhaus in 1929, Piening enrolled at the University of Berlin and obtained his PhD in philosophy in 1931.
Piening spent his early career free-lancing as an illustrator and artist for various publishing companies, eventually settling in Paris to work for Condé-Nast’s French publication of Vogue. In 1934 he moved to the United States to work in Condé-Nast’s New York City office. For the next two decades, Piening worked for many important advertising agencies and magazine publishers, including the N. W. Ayer and J. Walker Thompson agencies and Life and Fortune magazines. As art director for Life in the 1930s and for Fortune in the 1940s, Piening completely redesigned the layout of each magazine. He also redesigned the layouts for thirty-four other major American magazines, including Town & Country and Cosmopolitan.
Through his design work, Piening had a great impact on the American public, although the millions who encountered his work most likely never knew his name. Between 1934 and 1964, Piening designed over sixty logos and trademarks for internationally-known products and companies. His most widely-recognized logo may have been the three interlocking rings of Ballantine beer. Piening’s other trademark designs include the Lincoln Zephyr...

Catalogue Raisonne Reference: Feldman & Schellmann II.5
Marilyn Monroe I Love Your Kiss Forever Forever, 1964
Color lithograph on two pages wove paper (from the Artists & Collaborators hand signed edition of 1 Cent Life Portfolio, Estate of the artist Robert Indiana)
Edition 85/100
Hand signed by Andy Warhol on the front; numbered 85 on the colophon page a copy of which is affixed to the back of the frame
Framed: Elegantly floated in a museum quality wood frame with UV plexiglass
A copy of the colophon page has been affixed to the back of the frame. This is the first time the work has been removed from the original signed portfolio acquired from the Estate of Robert Indiana, one of the artists in 1 Cent Life.
Framed: elegantly floated and framed in a museum quality wood frame with UV plexiglass
This iconic 1964 Andy Warhol lithograph, splayed across two separate pages, is from the Deluxe, hand signed edition of only 100 of the legendary 1 Cent Life Portfolio - one of the most important and celebrated artistic collaborations of the 1960s. Provenance is superb as this was part of the complete portfolio acquired from the estate of Pop Artist Robert Indiana.
(There was also an unsigned regular edition of 2000)
"Marilyn Monroe I Love Your Kiss Forever Forever" is Warhol’s first depiction of Marilyn Monroe. Unlike later portrayals of the classic Hollywood star’s likeness set against vibrant colors, here Warhol has detailed a focused image of Monroe’s most seductive and elusive feature - her lips - set against a stark white backdrop.
Chinese American artist and writer Walasse Ting, in collaboration with Sam Francis, assembled a group of the most significant Pop and Abstract Expressionist artists in America, including Andy Warhol, along with the European COBRA artists to create the definitive artistic portfolio, with text by Walasse Ting. The Deluxe edition, which features hand signed prints, was published in a limited edition of only 100. This is one of them. Of the 100, editions numbered 60-100, or 40 portfolios, were reserved exclusively for Artists & Collaborators. This hand signed Andy Warhol lithograph...

1970s Joan Miró lithograph (Miró prints)
By Joan Miró
Located in NEW YORK, NY
1970s Joan Miró Lithograph:
Lithographic insert from the 1979 exhibition catalog published on the occasion of Miro's exhibition at Maeght gallery, Paris.
12.5 x 17.75 inches.
Very good overall vintage condition; minor signs of aging; contains a center fold-line as originally issued. Printed on fine, heavy stock paper.
Unsigned from an edition of unknown.
Catalan artist Joan Miró (Spanish, 1893–1983) spent a few years in technical school as a teenager before he began his artistic career. He trained at Francesc Galí’s Escola d’Art in Barcelona from 1912 to 1915, after which he had his first solo show in Barcelona at the gallery of José Dalmau in 1918. Starting in 1920, Miró divided his time between Montroig, Spain, and Paris, where he commingled with poets such as Max Jacob, and took part in Dada activities. Dalmau organized a solo show for Miró in Paris at the Galerie la Licorne in 1921, and in 1924, Miró joined the Surrealist movement. The consistently Abstract nature of his works, such as The Birth of the World (1925) blended well with the dream-like ambiance of Surrealism.
After a trip to the Netherlands in 1928, Miró created the series Dutch Interiors, in which amorphous forms entered into his work. On October 12, 1929, he married Pilar Juncosa in Palma de Mallorca, and then moved to Paris. During this period, he rebelled against painting, and produced wood reliefs, assemblages, and collages. Although he was living in France, the influence of the Spanish Civil War can be observed in the intense color and strong imagery of Still-life with an Old Shoe (1937). Experimentation continued in Miró’s work until his death in 1983. His wide body of work included ceramics, various prints, drawing, and sculpture. Major projects include the 1958 ceramic murals The Sun and The Moon for the UNESCO building in Paris. He collaborated with Josep Llorens Artigas, and was awarded the Guggenheim Foundation’s Grand Prize. This collaboration can been seen in the artwork called Miró Artigas. Numerous retrospectives of his works have taken place during his lifetime and after.

About 1 Cent Life
"1 Cent Life" began as a simple idea by artist Walasse Ting in 1962, developed during talks he had with his friend the artist Sam Francis. Ting wanted to combine international artists and different styles into a single book, linking them together in one collective spirit alongside his own art and poetry. It was a landmark publication from 1964, and now a somewhat rare collectible portfolio based on the impressive artwork it contains. It was a revolutionary tract for a collective aesthetic; an assembled vision of Pop and European abstraction, featuring flat hard-edged and splatter painting; biomorphic art, splashing florescent colors and monochromes all meeting up in a single loud and dynamic package. "1 Cent Life" is among the most beautifully conceived and artistic book-works of the 1960s, unlike anything published before or after. "1 Cent Life" is a large elephant-folio unbound book containing 62 lithographs made by 28 European and American artists with 62 letterpress poems by Ting and set in multi-colored inks. The lithography was realized and printed in Paris by Maurice Beaudet and the typography carried out in handset letterpress by George Girard. The book was published by E. W. Kornfeld, Bern, Switzerland in 1964, and edited by artist Sam Francis. In addition to the original printing of 1900 unsigned copies, there was a numbered portfolio edition of 100 signed copies. These two Sam Francis signed...

About Sam Francis
B. 1923, SAN MATEO, CALIFORNIA; D. 1994, SANTA MONICA, CALIFORNIA

Producing such work led to his association with Art Informel, although Francis never fully associated with any movement. A visit to Japan in 1957 coincided with an opening up of expanses of white space in much of his work, and his subsequent move to a larger studio in Paris resulted in the production of large-scale paintings and mural commissions, including a 1959 painting...
