Lucien Alliot French Art Deco Bronze The Gazelles 1930. The brown patina on a marble base signed on the bronze L Alliot and stamped bronze on the deer. This particular piece has exceptional rhythm where the two gazelles interplay in a movement depicting leaping over the hills or water—a very three-dimensional treatment showing the movement of the animals. Lucien Charles Eduoard Alliot (1877-1967), the sculptor, was born in 1877 Paris, France. His work was part of the sculpture event in the art competition at the 1924 Summer Olympics. He exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français, was a member and the gold medal in 1920, out of competition, and was a member of the sculpture jury from 1934 to 1939. Alliot was well known for his figurative sculptures, exhibited at the Salon de Paris for many years. He received a third-place award in 1907 (which included funds for travel expenses) and a first-place award l in 1920. After he declared himself out of the artistic competition, he became a jury member at the Salon evaluating sculptural works from 1934 to 1939. Depicts a modernist stylized form of a man in a streamline moderne style. José Florencio Gelabert Pérez (Caibarien, 1904 - Havana, 1995) Cuban musician, sculptor, draftsman and teacher. He graduated from the San Alejandro National Academy of Fine Arts in 1934. He received numerous awards, mentions and recognitions in Fine Arts Halls and Circles. His works are in the permanent collection of the National Museum of Fine Arts. Florencio Gelabert is a renowned sculptor, who made more than twenty solo exhibitions beginning in 1929, several in the National Museum of Fine Arts, and participated in more than thirty collectives in Cuba, Spain and Brazil, the latter in the Sao Paulo Biennial. he traveled from Caibarién to Santa Clara in 1928 to audition to enter the famous San Alejandro Fine Arts School in Havana. He obtained one of the five vacancies. Already in the Cuban capital, he combined fine arts and music. When he graduated, he became a professor in San Alejandro and the academy’s principal in 1960. With a calling common to wood sculptors –which began with his primary school carving carpentry classes and the active life of his home town’s shipyards, his chisels and gouges feverishly turned mahogany, “ácana” and ebony into female heads with black African features dating back to 1930. In 1938 he used his savings to explore Europe: France (Paris, Marseilles), Italy (Naples, Rome, Florence, and Venice), Belgium (Malina). Victor Max Ninon (Vittorio Accornero de Testa, Italian, 1896-1982) Biography Vittorio Accornero de Testa was born in Casale Monferrato in 1896. He completed his first studies at the "Leardi" institute, but was forced to interrupt them due to the war events of the First World War . At 19 he was second lieutenant of the Alpine troops and in 1916 he took one of the first pilot's licenses. During the war he knows the bitterness of shooting down in air combat (for which he is decorated), but also the good fortune to stay alive, albeit with a disability. His art blossomed in the postwar period, first signing his works simply Ninon and then, probably at the suggestion of a French publisher, under the pseudonym of "Victor Max Ninon" (Victor and Max indicate strength and masculinity, Ninon boyhood) .In 1919 and 1924 he made illustrations for theGiornalino della Domenica , also together with his first wife Edina Altara , for Ardita and La Lettura . The two stayed in the American metropolis for a few months: in this period Accornero worked on the creation of theatrical sets and created some covers for Country Life magazine . Accornero gets awards and prizes, but the great economic crisis of the time and the nostalgia for Italy convince the two to return to their homeland, where they resume their activity as illustrators. In 1934 Accornero moved to Milan, separated amicably from his wife and continued to dedicate himself to the illustration of children's books, abandoning the pseudonym Victor Max Ninon. From 1935 to 1950 he also devoted himself to the theater, taking care of sets and costumes for numerous operettas, ballets and performances at the Scala in Milan and for the Milanese theaters Manzoni, Lirico and Olympia. Bristol Again This graphite pencil drawing ‘Neo Deco – 03-12-22’ follows after a couple of colored pencil drawings. These were fun to do but I wanted to get back to basics and to me that has always been black and white. There was another reason too. Some months ago I drew ‘Art Deco Nude – 05-08-22’ on Ingres paper, which I didn’t use for a long time. Next to the love for Ingres I was a bit worried how my new Faber-Castell pencils would react on Bristol paper. I did a couple of tests then on demand of Brugman Art who gave me these to try out. Initially they felt a bit sticky on Bristol and a bit too smooth. Today I have to withdraw this statement and replace it with newer and better experiences. Gradients My major concern was whether I could get smooth tonal gradients such as the ones in my Roundism series. Now that I tried to combine Pitt Graphite Matt with Bristol I see I can. The gradients are just fine whereas I can blacken the paper even more than with regular graphite pencil. It is even susceptible for rubbing out. Furthermore it gives me the ability to find heftier expressions, covering the total tonal bandwith from pure black to pristine white.
