CommeDesGarcons 1997 AdultPunk Transparent EcruOrganza WhiteSilk Dinner Jacket

About the Item

1997 arguably marked the pinnacle of Japanese Comme des Garcons founder and fashion designer Rei Kawakubo's collection debuts when she introduced deconstructed asymmetrical "lumps and bumps" padding and transparent tops that both deformed and revealed female bodies. For her Fall/Winter 1997 "Adult Punk" collection, she debuted this transparent ecru organza pullover dinner jacket or evening oversized blouse, whose bodice and lower long sleeves are color-blocked with white textured silk-blend appliques and lined in white tulle that is hand-sheered above the outer hem. A recent Parisian exhibition at Musee de la Mode, "1997 Fashion Big Bang", celebrated this "watershed year in the history of contemporary fashion" given its high "number of emblematic collections" by 1990s designers who remain stars today--over 25 years later--such as Kawakubo, Margiela, Simons, Galliano, McQueen, Mugler and Westwood. Referencing cut crinkly translucent pattern-making paper, this jacket/blouse is distinguished by six distressed appliques--four of which are asymmetric, plus two symmetric wide bands on the sleeves. The partly-tailored appliques, some with ecru top-stitching and fraying edges, are mostly affixed to the organza via heat transfer. Their abstract shapes conceal most of the lower torso with the exception of the side seams and bottom, while enabling the sheer roomy irregular yoke to reveal the upper arms, shoulders and decolletage. Conjuring Japanese culture and strong feminine identity, the glamorous pullover has flared kimono-like 21.5-inch stiff sleeves with transparent dropped shoulders and a voluminous opaque chest with peplum suggesting Kabuki-theatre costumes or see-through armor. The top front features a faux plunging neckline whose crevasse-like opening extending down to the waist is created by inward-folding organza that is tucked between the two symmetrical curved princess seams that define the breasts. Another pair of princess seams repeats on the back without the voluminous folds. Instead, an exaggerated yet concealed zipper in the center enables closure. Like T-shirt iron-on decals, the permanently wrinkly appliques will further deconstruct each time they are worn or cleaned, while the smooth synthetic organza will remain sturdy. It's like an elegant couture version of punk T-shirts, which stand out in fashion history for their slashed cut-work and other elements of deconstruction. The crotch-length pullover, which can accommodate a range of sizes, is in very good condition so that the buyer can leave their own distinct impression of wear on the appliques. When worn, the "Garcons" wording on the exterior folded part of the entire "Comme des Garcons" brand tag can be read through the transparent back left shoulder. Aside from the concealed S-size tag, the bulky material tags were removed by the sole owner, who wore it at least once. The long-dress version of the seemingly one-off pullover--without the dramatic plunging neckline--was photographed by Vogue as part of its archived fashion-show coverage, where it can be seen online as "Look 23" or as our included photo of it.

  • Gucci TomFord 2001AwardYear Leather TuxedoPeakLapel SingleClasp EcruDinnerJacket
By Tom Ford for Gucci, Gucci
    Located in Chicago, IL
Tom Ford for his Gucci Spring/Summer 2001 collection toyed with the retro mid-century concept of nude sex-appeal embodied by Marilyn Monroe, who inspired that season's designs and ad campaign. With the themes of bare skin and black-seamed sheer stockings, Ford's opening looks on his fashion-show runway featured ecru corset dresses with black transparent or leather overlays and stiletto heels (see our other listing for runway "Look 2"). Our versatile ecru leather tuxedo-influenced sharp-shoulder dinner jacket is from the same award-winning collection. Significantly, 2001 was the year that Tom Ford (b. 1961) won the Council of Fashion Designers of America womenswear award for Designer of the Year, while The Met acquired Ford's signature corset dress for its Costume Institute collection. Purchased at the Gucci boutique on Manhattan's Upper East Side, this "Made In Italy"-labeled jacket is an Italian-size 40 or US-size 6 with the padded shoulder-to-shoulder seam measurement of 15.4 inches and 23.6 inches arm length. The jacket is streamlined by marked and angled peak lapels, sleeve vents with concealed buttons, back symmetrical vent, and single-point closure near the interior seam via a tiny Gucci branded silver-tone metal clasp. Notably, these are among the most technically challenging elements to tailor. Fully lined in ecru silk-blend fabric, the jacket's left interior chest pocket sports button-and-fabric-loop closure and a fully sewn larger black Gucci brand label. We added photos of the jacket worn over our black-tulle-covered ecru strapless balconette corset dress that was the Gucci Spring/Summer 2001 fashion...

  • Extraordinary Elsa Schiaparelli Haute Couture Evening Jacket
    By Elsa Schiaparelli
    Located in New York, NY
"In difficult times, fashion is always outrageous" Elsa Schiaparelli,1930's. "Life has changed so much, A Schiaparelli was never made for the streets." Karl Lagerfeld, 1970's. 2 quotes,2 designers, 4 decades apart. 4 decades later. Although these quotes are highly debatable, especially in the context of today's high-low designer collabs and pop up retailing, iconic fashion endures. Whether now relegated to a museum exhibition, a collector's acid free box or a celebrity one nighter, these fashion artifacts from the french Haute Couture of the 1930's echo a time, pace and culture unrecognizable to most people today. Schiaparelli changed the definition of what it meant to be a designer at an important time in the evolution of the Haute Couture. Rather than simply making beautifully elegant garments (which she also did), she focused on the concepts behind the pieces. For her fashion was a fluid medium and she effortlessly blended fashion, politics and the fine arts. She was one of the most innovative and rebellious designers of the period working against what she considered the stale fashion currents of the day. She was elegant yet untrained. As a protege of Poiret, she gained entry into the world of Parisian fashion. While her rival Chanel was essentially uneducated and a “primitive” in the artistic circles in which she socialized, Schiaparelli’s impeccable social credentials as the daughter of an old and distinguished Roman family gave her a relatively easy entree into Paris society. She was a subversive, a punk, a desecrator, a collaborator, an innovator as well as the ultimate insider whose plans on design domination and creating "la zone rose" for the modern world were cut short by the advent of WWII. She was at the height of her influence and power showing 4 iconic collections in the last years of the decade. Fascinating to consider what the House of Schiaparelli could have brought forth in the following decades had the world not been swept away in turmoil at that moment. In the context of her short prewar career, few remaining masterworks have survived. The rare "moment" she created in the 30's lives on within each art piece, safelocked away within each stitch and sequin. Each design retains her spirit and legacy as a free thinking, modernist rebel who used the avantegarde as her platform in the most creative period of fashion design in the 20th Century. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rare and Important Elsa Schiaparelli Haute Couture...
