From Japan, a lovely and unusual early 20th century attached collection of five graduated large to small scale bronze temple bells hand painted engraved with birds and flowers on a red patina ground- all suspended from a sturdy cord with a later added cinnabar round good luck ornament and tassel.
Early Taisho Period
Complete set bells when suspended top of loop to bottom of tassel/ornament, 36". Bell diameters from 3.25" to 6".
The delicate mystical birds and flowers and cloud like designswith a rim diaper pattern edge decoration suggest a joyful, spiritual and harmonious natural ambience. This is a handcrafted group is accompanied with a Japanese hardwood striker. Beautiful resonating ring tones await the new owner of this big one-of-a-kind vintage bronze bell from old Japan. Its beautiful natural patina makes it an attractive and desirable work of art. This distinctive dragon headed bell called ryuzu and remarkable protrusions called chi chi or nyu are crafted by generations old skilled Japanese specialists to improve sound resonance and are unique to Japan's ancient traditions.
This vintage hand cast bronze temple bell dates to the middle Showa period, mid-20th century.
A scarce survivor, this rugged bell was gently used.
Please note its impressive cast dragon headed top ryuzu, thick walls and original blue gray toned patina.
Dimensions: 18 inches tall and 10 inches diameter. It has been used and possesses an original aged patina appropriate to its age-just the way we like to find them.
Its beautiful resonating sound is guaranteed to please you.

Original Japanese temple "blossoming lotus" flower bud stems form an attractive double bouquet. Made for a shrine altar, these flower blossoms and leaves symbolize the stages of the path toward enlightenment. The individual parts of each lotus is assembled and then joined in an arrangement of two stems and two bouquets and inserted into the vessel. Called "Jyôka" and they are placed on or next to an altar in a Buddhist temple. In Buddhism, the lotus is an important symbol of divine enlightenment because it blooms into beautiful flowers while growing in mud. Tsunehana means "a flower that continues to bloom forever" and "a flower that does not wither." For this reason, the flowers represented are in different stages of their life, unfolded lotus leaves, buds and full flowers, thus symbolizing the journey towards Buddhist enlightenment.
