Rococo Serveware, Ceramics, Silver and Glass
ROCOCO STYLE
Rococo was an aesthetic movement in the fine and decorative arts in the 18th century that found its inspiration in nature and fostered an overall lightness and delicacy of form, construction and ornament in interior design. Rococo furniture, while greatly influenced by trends in Italy and Germany, is often called Louis XV style — the movement having reached its best expression during that sybaritic French king’s reign.
The term “rococo” is thought to be a portmanteau of the French words rocaille and coquilles — “rock” and “shells” — organic motifs frequently used in architecture and design of the style.
When it comes to authentic Rococo furniture's characteristics, it is above all sensuous and social. The furniture of earlier eras in Europe had been heavy in every sense; the Rococo period saw the appearance of light-framed upholstered armchairs, side chairs and occasional tables that could easily be moved to form conversational circles.
The signal detail of Rococo furniture design is the gently curved cabriole, or S-shaped chair-, table-, and cabinet-leg. It imitates the bend of a tree limb or a flower stem. In a further reference to nature, furnishings were often asymmetrical and painted white, or in soft, pastel shades. Rococo has become a timeless style, and as the furniture pieces presented on 1stDibs demonstrate, its playful, sculptural forms can provide visual excitement to contemporary, clean-lined spaces.

The dishes are rare examples of a service produced by the factory of Felice Clerici (1710-1780) in Milan.
Felice Clerici had opened his own factory in Milan in 1745, inserting himself into the new European stylistic trend which saw maiolica becoming a fine product like porcelain. The Milanese entrepreneur worked in the early period with high fire furnaces, declaring only in 1759 that he had purchased "the secrets of the paintings by force of money," by which he meant he now could obtain colors with a greater chromatic range with a low fire.
The two dishes are funds with lightly blue glaze. Smooth barely detectable rim and ring foot. Along the edge there is a thin orange band with a chain of small spirals whereas along the brim there is a typical oriental decoration with peonies and chrysanthemums and minor florets. The flounce hosts a motif "in reserves" centered inside alternating flower and trellis motifs on pink and green backgrounds. In the center an oriental floral ornament is developed around a sturdy branch.
On the back the "fraction" brand by Felice Clerici in black.
Raffella Ausenda, while cataloging a maiolica in the same model as ours, conserved in the collections of the Museo di Arti Applicate del Castello in Milan (to which we refer for comparison), highlights that the ornamentation is directly inspired by Chinese porcelain from the Kang'hsi period known as "Famille Rose". The Clerici manufacture had in fact such a technical command of colors that it could perfectly imitate the oriental models even thanks to the aid of painters such as Giuseppe Sormani and Giacomo Facchetti who “painted with enamel in gold and silver colors. They imitate and accompany porcelain".
The recent publication, edited by the same scholar (R. Ausenda in J.V.G. Mallet and E.P. Sani, a cura di, Maiolica in Italy and Beyond. pp. 124-140), underlines how the rebirth of maiolica in northern Italy also sprang from the experiences of the Milanese factory of Pasquale Rubati. This factory, established in 1756, obtained very high quality products, even considered among the best of the time. MODELLED BY:
MICHEL VICTOR ACIER (1736-1799)
The sculptor was born at Versailles / France. He had studied Art of Sculpture in Paris and was appointed as sculptor of Meissen Porcelain Manufactory then (1762). Acier created many models generally in style of Rococo and specially in Watteau style. Finally, the sculptor became Model Master of the Saxon King in year 1780, moving to Dresden then. - MODEL C 59 CREATED CIRCA 1768 - 70.

This fantastic vase is the work of J. Pascault, a famed porcelain artist of the late 19th Century who specialised in the production of Sevres-style pieces. It is beautifully executed, and especially impressive given its large size of one and a half metres (almost 5 feet) in height.
The vase is tall and slender in shape, set on a gilt bronze plinth, and surmounted by a cover with a pinecone finial. Its ovoid body is decorated around its exterior in the Rococo taste: showing a female figure and winged putti in a landscape...
