Founded in 1947 by Luigi Caccia Dominioni, Ignazio Gardella, and Corrado Corradi Dell'Acqua, the Italian brand Azucena has always stood out for its collections that combine formal elegance, understated luxury, pure aesthetics, and craftsmanship.
The brand, which the architects call Azucena after the name of the gypsy from the theatrical opera Il Trovatore, is created both to collect some of their furniture designs for use in furnishing the buildings they designed and, conversely, to be able to produce individually some furniture that is part of furniture series they designed.
Here the famous Floor Lamp model LTE5 so called "Imbuto": the name of this lamp also very clearly explains the inspiration from which the shape originated: a funnel. However, in this object of the funnel only the name remains. The lampshade is a metal cone that extends toward each other thanks to a thin stem from which a wide halo of light comes out.
Originally the design also had another name, namely "flûte." This shows that Luigi Caccia Dominioni's ideas came from simple objects but also from rarer instruments. The humble funnel meets the sophisticated flûte, an instrument that collects and guides water alongside another that holds wine and champagne, one functional and one exceptional, one made of plastic or metal and one of crystal: this was Caccia Dominioni's world, in which the exceptionality of everyday life and the most special moments coexisted. Louis Baldinger was an immigrant brass turner, who founded the company that bears his name in 1893. The company operated out of a small storefront plant in the historic Williamsburg section of old Brooklyn and specialized in creating and manufacturing beautiful decorative gas lighting fixtures. Deliveries were made to customers literally by horse-drawn wagon, throughout New York's cobblestone streets. In 1955, Daniel Baldinger, grandson of the company's founder, became president of the family business. The company grew tremendously and expanded into new markets during the latter part of the twentieth century. In 1985, Daniel's son Howard joined the company to become the fourth generation Baldinger in the business. Under Daniel Baldinger's leadership, the company solidified its position as a world-class manufacturer of high quality decorative lighting fixtures, with residential and corporate clients worldwide. He relocated and expanded the company's manufacturing plant to the Astoria section of Queens, where it has employed generations of highly skilled immigrant metal workers. One hallmark of Mr. Baldinger's efforts began in 1982 when architect Michael Graves chose Louis Baldinger & Sons as the manufacturer of the custom designed lighting fixtures for his seminal, Post-Modern Humana Building in Louisville, Kentucky. In 1986, with the project complete, the public and design-community response to the building and its lighting led Daniel Baldinger to found Baldinger Architectural Lighting, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Louis Baldinger & Sons, Inc. Baldinger Architectural Lighting, Inc. provides high quality, American made lighting fixtures designed by some of the world's most respected architects and designers. "Optunia" is a floor lamp, designed by Claesson Koivisto Rune and manufactured by Fontana Arte, featuring a structure in cast aluminium, available with paints in white, onyx or glossy black nickel-plated colors. Molded cast glass, frosted and painted from behind, working as a diffuser. Base in painted metal. Power source housed in the base for the wall and ceiling versions, in the breadboard for the hanging version or onto a peg in the table version. It's provided with a dimmer inserted on the electrical cord and lighting sources are two 11W LED (3000K, CRI>80, Lumen 1384 + 1384).
"Optunia" is a collection of lighting elements available in four variants for tabletop (with or without stem), floor, wall and ceiling. Its functionality lies in the possibility of rotating the two discs that make up the nearly 360 degrees head, opening up an extraordinary number of lighting combinations. The lower disc rotates on one axis, while the upper disk simultaneously rotates on a second axis, perpendicular to the first.
This double movement gives "Optunia" the advantages of both direct and indirect light emission, exploiting the surface of the wall or ceiling to produce a soft light. Complementing its functionality, the design of such lamp is reminiscent of a form found in nature: the two disks resemble the pads of the prickly pear called "Opuntia ficus-indica", from which the lamp takes its name. A collection of exceptional technical sophistication, whose form is further emphasized by its colors: opaque white, bold and clean, dark mirrored chrome, recalling the preciousness of metal, a darker shade resembling onyx and quartz color, shifting from dark brown to black.
