Augusto Romano, Architectural Mahogany Armchair and Ottoman, Italy, 1950s

About the Item

Augusto Romano (1918-2001) A stunning armchair and ottoman set by Torinese modernist architect Augusto Romano, in mahogany with brass detailing, upholstered in a deep chartreuse. An architectonic, rounded A-line frame culminates in tapering legs and splayed feet, connected by an organic, slanted cross bar. The sculpted arms open out onto elegantly flared, deeply recessed hollows. The frame supports an L-shaped seat with a gracefully cleft back. With a matching rounded A-frame ottoman. A contemporary of Franco Albini and Carlo Mollino ardently championed by Gio Ponti's Domus magazine, Romano displayed a lively experimental spirit and developed a distinct style, integrating the rationalist and the organic to create bold, multi-dimensional works that placed a premium on craftsmanship. Italy, 1950s Measures: 25" W x 33.5" D x 34" H.
