The Thinker statue is supposed to be Dante Alighieri. Born in Florence, Italy, in 1265, he was a poet and philosopher. Today, he is best known as the author of The Divine Comedy. Through his statue of Dante, Auguste Rodin intended to portray the writer gazing down into the circles of Hell as part of a larger work called The Gates of Hell.
