About the Item

In this handmade abstract tapestry by the Israeli artist Aviva Margalit, vibrant colors and dynamic diagonal movement fill the composition. This tapestry was specially executed for the Dvora Shocken Gallery at Itche Mambush work shop Ein Hod artist’s village, Israel. Margalit Mambush, Aviva, U.S.A., 1919- Aviva Margalit Mambush. b. 1919, U.S.A. Immigrated 1928. Studies: 1941-1943 Painting, Aharon Avni's Studio, Tel Aviv; 1943-1949 Painting with Stematsky and Streichman, Studia, Tel Aviv; 1951 Furter painting studies in Paris. From 1953 lived in Ein Hod. Married to artist Itche Mambush, with whom she founded workshop for weaving wall carpets and tapestries, workshop for lithography and screen printing, studio for artistic ceramics. Created walls in public buildings in Beersheba, Jerusalem and Ramat Gan. Her tapestries are in the Jewish Museum, New York. Prizes: 1954 Dizengoff Prize; 1966 First prize in ceramic exhibition, Lytton Center, Los Angeles. Died in Ein Hod 2004. In 1945,Yehezkel striechman and Avigdor stematsky started a new dynamic in the local art scene-the "Studia" in Tel-Aviv, Lazar joined the "Studia" together with: Michael Argov, David Lan-Bar, Dani Karavan, Dan kedar, Ephraim Lifshitz, Itche Mamboush, Aviva Margalit, Sioma Baram, Lea Nikel, Claire Yaniv, Zvi Tadmor, Bella Brisel, Shamai Haber, Esther Heller, Ben-Zion Einav, Yoram Kaniuk, Shimon Tsabar, Nissan Rylov, Shulamit Lewison, Rena Yaskolska, Zippora Brenner, Eliyahu Gat, Avraham Gofer Eli Mintz and Moshe Propes. The teachers and the students of the "Studia" established ties with "The center for Progressive Culture", whose members included authors and musicians. Eugen Kolb lectured to them on art criticism and art history; Haim Gamzu sometimes visited; artists such as Zritsky, Kahana, Aroch, Naton, Danziger and others came in to do unofficial critiques. Marcel Janco Joining the staff of teachers at the "Studia" for a short time, was closing a circle in Meir Lazar's life, because of the fact Janco used to teach Lazar the child back in Bucharest, Rumania.
