About the Item
Oil Pastel on archival 150g grey paper by Amanda Andersen.
One in a series of three drawings by Amanda Andersen created during an artist residency at the Vermont Studio Center in 2012. During this residency the artist explored ideas of flight while researching the invention and design of the hot air balloon.
These drawings belong to a larger group of work reflecting on the duality of the balloon as a symbol for romantic flight as well as a powerful tool of displacement.
Here the artist was especially interested in the parts that make up a balloon canopy, the pieces of the pattern are called gores, similar in shape to a natural tree leaf. Specifically a gore is one panel–a segment of a hot air balloon envelope–six of these are sewn together to create a full balloon canopy, therefore six gore shapes are represented on each piece in this series.
Minimal repeating outlines of this organic looking shape appear in black, grey, dark orange, light blue and yellow on neutral colored grey paper.
The artwork is initialed on the back and has acid free tape on the corners.
Artwork ships in a tube from Hamburg.

Amanda Andersen
Based out of a poorly heated–yet cozy attic studio bordering the icy waters of Northern Europe, Amanda has been working for over 10 years as a professional artist; creating paintings as well as artist books and digital artworks. Working mostly in acrylic paint on canvas, she makes minimal compositions with sprinklings of high contrast patterns and color. Using minimalist strategies, she pedals between the abstract and figurative. Inspired by the rigid lines of Agnes Martin and organic forms of Eva Hesse, she also adores fantasy films, surrealism, brutalist architecture and a really smooth gradient. Amanda is also an illustrator and animator creating works under digital pseudonym We Throw Rocks, setting paintings in motion. Her work has shown internationally, including: the Kunstraum Kreuzberg in Berlin, Tiny Creatures in Los Angeles, the National Centre for Contemporary Arts State Museum in St Petersburg. Her most recent exhibition was completely virtual; Flora | Fauna hosted by Tez1and, presented by CleanNFTs and Teia.
Amanda received a BFA in Illustration from the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon, and completed a MA at the Universität der Künste Berlin, Germany. Her work has been featured in Art Review, Art Kunstmagazin and is held in many private collections as well as the MOMA Art Library and MACBA Barcelona.
