1984

About the Item

CARL ANDRE Untitled Drawing, 1984 Felt tip pen, marker and stamp on Postmarked (franked) card to Lynn Charles Foster 3 3/5 × 6 1/10 inches Hand-signed by artist, Hand signed by Carl Andre with his unique copyright, also hand addressed to the artist, with artist's home address in black ink. Unique original hand signed, dated and addressed drawing in red marker on a handmade card. The drawing is boldly signed in black marker by Carl Andre, who addressed the card to a fellow artist, accompanied by his return address and the date the work was created (25 May, 1984). Carl Andre sent this card to Lynn Charles Foster, a Vermont landscape artist and songwriter who formerly resided in Oregon. Carl Andre at the time stated that the verso of the card depicts an original child's drawing that he found and incorporated into his own work - so its essentially a two sided piece. The card also has a postmarked 13 cent stamp, along with a postmark from New York dated 25 May 1984. The piece had been removed from the original frame, but had been mounted to a 8 by 10 white card, and there are two thin pieces of white mounting tape on the verso. A rare Carl Andre drawing that he created in the mid 1980s for a fellow artist and admirer. As an historical note -- what's also cool and intriguing is that decades before Twitter, hashtag, Instagram, etc. and long before he himself was using the Internet, the artist always signed his name with his copyright "@Carl Andre....

  • Ruckus Rodeo (unique acrylic painting by famed Pop artist w/ Marlborough label)
    By Red Grooms
    Located in New York, NY
Red Grooms Ruckus Rodeo, 1975 Acrylic and felt tip pen on paper Signed and dated in black felt marker Unique work Provenance: Marlborough-Gerson Gallery, with original label verso Frame included: in museum frame with UV plexiglass Measurements: 22.75 inches vertical by 19.75 inches horizontal by 1.5 inches Work 16.5 inches vertical by 13.5 inches horizontal This work on paper, Ruckus Rodeo, is a unique study by Red Grooms for one of the most popular works of art in the Museum of Modern Art, Ft. Worth, Texas's collection. Ruckus Rodeo is an immense, walk-through work of art that covers 1,237 square feet of gallery space. It consists of painted two-dimensional surfaces and sculptural three-dimensional figures that re-create the Fort Worth rodeo. Grooms has referred to this work as a "sculpto-pictorama." Sculpture wire, canvas, burlap, acrylic paint, and a fiberglass compound known as celastic were used to construct the work’s Texas-sized, larger-than-life, three-dimensional caricatures of rodeo archetypes, which include the rodeo queen and her steed, a bucking bronc, playful rodeo clowns, and a giant yellow bull named Butter. Ruckus Rodeo was commissioned for the Museum's 1976 exhibition The Great American Rodeo. Grooms was one of eleven artists invited to create a work for this show. In preparation, he attended every rodeo performance during Fort Worth's 1975 Stock Show and made many sketches. From these studies, Grooms drew a panoramic rodeo scene spanning more than seven feet, which served as the basis for Ruckus Rodeo's design. Grooms returned to his studio in New York to fabricate the work's major figures. In 1976, he returned to Fort Worth with the talented fifteen-member group of painters, sculptors, engineers, and carpenters known as the "Ruckus Construction Co.," who helped in the final assembly of Grooms's robust tableau. Associate Curator Andrea Karnes commented, "Ruckus Rodeo portrays the chaos, entertainment, and danger of the Fort Worth rodeo. Grooms's engaging work is characterized by a grand sense of spectacle, encompassing the ritual, pageantry, and disorderly commotion of a real rodeo event. The artist's interest in naive and primitive objects, such as folk art puppets and toys, is easily seen in this work. His rich, arbitrary use of bold and unmodulated colors combined with angular contours creates a loud, brash ambience. Despite the work's cartoonish flair, it is clearly inflected with an urban sensibility. The characters' outfits, for example, are more like the vibrant apparel of the urban cowboy...

  • Unique painting on paper done with paint roller by Minimalist pioneer Lyman Kipp
    Located in New York, NY
Lyman Kipp Unique painting on paper done with paint roller, 1970 Ink roller painting on paper Signed and dated in ink by Lyman Kipp on the lower right Frame included: elegantly framed in a museum quality wood frame with UV plexiglass This is a unique color oil painting created in 1970 with his signature technique of using a roller, by pioneering Minimalist artist Lyman Kipp, one of the founders of Construct Gallery., which included sculptors Kenneth Snelson and Mark di Suvero. Measurements: Frame: 17.5 x 15.25 x 1.75 inches Artwork: 11 x 8.5 inches About Lyman Kipp: The large, powerful sculptures of Lyman Kipp were part of the Primary Structures movement in the 1960s, that transformed the way sculptors worked, and the way in which sculpture was viewed in America. The Constructivism movement, that began in Moscow in the 1920s, espoused the idea that art should be created for the benefit of society and that artists should be involved in industrial design and construction. It viewed the artist as a creator, designer and constructor. The simplicity of design of the Constructivists had a profound effect on the De Stijl movement in the Netherlands and the Bauhaus movement in Germany during the 1920s and ‘30s. Artists in the United States were slowly embracing the ideas of constructivism and minimalism, but it took a group of artists, including Kipp, to change the way artists, and the public, create and view art. Kipp was born in Dobbs Ferry, New York in 1929. He studied at Pratt Institute in New York and then went on the study and teach at the Cranbook Academy in Michigan. He began making large, steel and aluminum sculptures in the 1960s, that had to be transported and welded together on site. He worked in spare, geometric shapes and primary colors. In 1966, the Jewish Museum in New York organized the Primary Structures exhibit, showing large, minimal style works by young American and British sculptors. The show was a huge success, and got rave reviews by art critics, including those of Time and Newsweek. In an effort to get continued recognition, a group of American sculptors, including Lyman Kipp, founded an artist-owned gallery called, ConStruct. They organized exhibitions throughout the United States to promote their large-scale sculptures. The pieces we have in our gallery are maquettes, preliminary models that Kipp made before he built and assembled his huge, finished sculptures. In addition to painting and creating sculptures for public spaces, Kipp dedicated his life to art education. He taught at Bennington College in Vermont, Hunter College in New York and became the chairman of the art department at Lehman College in New York. Kipp’s works are part of the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Lyman Kipp died in Bonita Springs, Florida on March 30, 2014, leaving a legacy of his work in parks and public spaces around Florida and other states throughout the U.S. Courtesy of Vertu Fine Art
