Carole Myers
"Living Water" Neon Pink and Blue Modern Abstract Painting

2005

About the Item

Blue, pink, and white modern abstract mixed media painting by Texas artist, Carole Myers. The work features expressive strokes of blue accented by bright strokes of neon pink. The piece is signed in the front lower right corner. Matted; unframed but framing options are available. Dimensions Without Frame: H 20.5 in. x W 29 in. Artist Statement “My work as a painter has been inspired for many years by the beauty of landscapes. I express both the vast panoramic views and intimate bits of nature with a spiritual response, rather than a literal interpretation. Various symbols are often included to add to the mystery of my paintings that may be inspired by petroglyphs, pictographs or personal calligraphy, leaving the interpretation to the viewers. As an experimental artist working on canvas or paper, I use a variety of water media, (fluid acrylic, Interference acrylics, transparent watercolors, watercolor crayons, etc.) along with collage and found objects. Painting in response to the sounds of nature or music (Native American flute, classical guitar, jazz or flamenco) enhances the creative process.” Artist Biography: Carole began her journey as an artist in Oklahoma over 70 years ago. She became known for her unique style and experimental watercolor techniques. Her style is abstract, using watercolor, mixed-media collage and acrylic on paper as well as acrylic and collage on canvas. Through her life she lived in El Paso, St. Louis and finally, San Antonio. Southwestern landscapes and Mexico were major sources of inspiration for her work and she travelled extensively, sketchbook or camera always close at hand. Carole Myers, a signature member of the American Watercolor Society and the National Watercolor Society was also active in the San Antonio Watercolor Group and Texas Watercolor Society (Purple Sage Brush Member). She has won more than 300 awards including the High Winds Medal Award in the 122nd Annual Exhibition of AWS. Her work is included in The Best of Watercolor, Creative Watercolor, Step by Step, The Creative Artist, Abstracts in Watercolor, Texas Watercolor Society: Fifty Years of Excellence, Watercolor Magic, and several others. She served a juror and critic for exhibitions and taught numerous art workshops in Rockport, San Antonio, Fort Worth, Kerrville and throughout the U.S. as well as in Mexico and France. “I express both the vast panoramic views and intimate bits of nature with a spiritual response, rather than a literal interpretation.”

The discipline of creating a drawing each day is a process, like a written diary, to clear the mind, to declutter thoughts, and to observe patterns. It is a method that allows the mind a freedom to wander and drift. A visual journal becomes a safe space for personal reflection–a self-awareness fueled by the opportunity for contemplation and immersion. The painted surface for the drawings was created by dividing five large paintings into 40 separate pieces. I chose five paintings from my Perspective Series (1993-94), which relied on day-to-day imagery that narrated a story about shifting time and how time anchors our day. The brush strokes of Perspectives are fluid, with muted colors – moving from deep blacks to taupe whites. Dividing these pieces was a means for me to rethink ideas and recurring images in my older work. The very thin gold leaf applied to each piece has a wonderful amber tone. This gold leaf is from Myanmar, where it is used as decoration for Buddha or for the dome of a temple or monastery. In the drawings, the gold element relates to the sense of infinity – like the sky in an enclosed courtyard. An architectural element is a critical component in my studio work that I wanted to carry over into these pieces. I envisioned a courtyard–a safe space that opens up to the sky. Unfolding circles define the beginnings of an open interior space. The process felt open-ended. It was an opportunity to get lost in thought and to give me an opportunity to reflect, muse and declutter my thinking. Then repeat. 40 days...
