Caroline Bullock
'Thermogenesis 1' - Nature-based Abstract - Mixed Media - Cyanotype - Kapoor

2020

About the Item

"Thermogenesis 1," is an abstract work on paper featuring electric hues of pink, orange, purple, turquoise and white. This piece is framed in a simple white box frame behind Plexiglas measuring 34 by 26.5 inches. Caroline Bullock is inspired by the work of Agnes Martin, Anish Kapoor, Katharina Grosse, Andy Goldsworthy and Lucy Dodd. Atlanta native, Caroline Bullock creates mixed media abstract works whose primary inspiration is the human relationship with the natural world. Bullock is interested in how we attempt to create our perceived human reality with complex systems of mathematics, science, and technology, but with nature as the backdrop and laboratory. Mathematics is the language of nature, but it also distorts the perception of natural beauty and mystery. Caroline is intrigued by the unseen and subterranean and what happens at the subatomic level. She uses cyanotype as the physical backdrop of her work because this photographic process serves as a direct marker of place in time. The final works are a juxtaposition between controlled photographic moments and non-linear unpredictable painting. Bullock received a BFA in Drawing and Painting from Georgia State University. Her work is included in multiple private and corporate collections worldwide. Her latest body of work is titled ‘WAYFINDING.’ The term “wayfinding” is used to describe the multiple ways humans and animals orient themselves in physical space and navigate through this space. This body of work explores her philosophical and scientific questions about the nature of reality, impermanence and the intersections between science and spirituality. The pieces in this new body of work can be seen as personal maps and signs, examples of what she turned to or uncovered when structures in her life she once thought solid changed or dissolved. While quantum mechanics, eastern spiritual traditions and philosophy continued to inform the work, the very act of painting itself became a wayfinding tool. Much of the process involved pouring pools of paint, sometimes manipulating the paper, other times not, often allowing gravity to do the work, and trusting the paint to forge its own way into a form more authentic than one she could control with her hands. The process is as important then as the end product as it offers a chance at reconciliation with unanswerable questions.
