About the Item
As both an artist and a seasoned painting conservator, Craddock spends much time examining surfaces under magnification. Her eye for detail is translated here with her keen rendering of precise color and texture variations within both skin and flesh of an individual piece of fruit or vegetable. The left square usually represents the skin of the object, and the right-hand portion describes the interior flesh.
"Daisy Craddock’s subtle diptychs defy a first glance. What appear to be abstract blocks of color become, on further inspection, a close-focused realism. The left side of each pair depicts the skin of a specific fruit or vegetable, while the right portion depicts the flesh. Craddock’s work displays a modulated and detailed complexity, created from layers of scumbled and burnished oil pastel. The palette ranges from “Granny Smith” with vibrant green of the skin mirrored by grey-green flesh, to “Plum” in which a purple skin balances a soft red flesh."
