Daru Jung Hyang Kim
Untfurled #9

About the Item

Daru Jung Hyang Kim’s Unfurled work integrates the two aspects of her aesthetic and sensibility into one composition. She merges culture and nature, merging East and West, the traditional and the contemporary to signify a traversing across time and space. While Jung Hyang Kim’s imagery is not necessarily Buddhist, it often depicts—among other subjects—lotus flowers that are naturalistic and abstract, checkered wheel shapes that recall dharma wheels and loose chains of usually small white circles that resemble necklaces or prayer beads. Dotted chains often extend across the work. The substance of Kim’s work is its lightness, fragility and buoyancy, qualities that approximate aspects of Buddhist philosophy. Kim’s circles—and her images are most often based on circles, variations of circles or shapes within circles—images of generation, regeneration and change. . She describes her work as “an unfurling,” a gradual revelation in constant renewal and eternal return. Daru Jung Hyang Kim studied at Seoul National University, receiving her Bachelors degree in 1977. She moved to New York that same year to study at Pratt Institute and received her Masters degree in 1980. Since then, she has been widely exhibited in the United States and Korea, including the Bronx Museum of the Arts in New York, the Phillips Museum of Art in Pennsylvania, and the BenShahn Galleries in New Jersey. Daru's exhibitions have been reviewed in numerous publications including, the New York Times, Art in America, Art Asia Pacific, Asia Times,Art in Culture, Wolgan Misool, Arts Gazette, Space Magazine, New York Sun, Buffalo News, Golf Herald, Business Week and numerous local newspapers, radio and television. Daru was the winner of MTA Arts for Transit - Jamaica Line (Crescent Street Station). This project was completed in May 2007, and is a permanent installation. In 2011, Daru completed three monumental public art works in Korea for the LIG Insurance company. Most recently, she completed a major commissions for NYU Langone Medical Center, including a 12 ‘ x 20’ glass work for the lobby and a 12’ x 24’ outdoor mosaic. Additionally, her work is owned by many major corporations, private collectors and museums.

The discipline of creating a drawing each day is a process, like a written diary, to clear the mind, to declutter thoughts, and to observe patterns. It is a method that allows the mind a freedom to wander and drift. A visual journal becomes a safe space for personal reflection–a self-awareness fueled by the opportunity for contemplation and immersion. The painted surface for the drawings was created by dividing five large paintings into 40 separate pieces. I chose five paintings from my Perspective Series (1993-94), which relied on day-to-day imagery that narrated a story about shifting time and how time anchors our day. The brush strokes of Perspectives are fluid, with muted colors – moving from deep blacks to taupe whites. Dividing these pieces was a means for me to rethink ideas and recurring images in my older work. The very thin gold leaf applied to each piece has a wonderful amber tone. This gold leaf is from Myanmar, where it is used as decoration for Buddha or for the dome of a temple or monastery. In the drawings, the gold element relates to the sense of infinity – like the sky in an enclosed courtyard. An architectural element is a critical component in my studio work that I wanted to carry over into these pieces. I envisioned a courtyard–a safe space that opens up to the sky. Unfolding circles define the beginnings of an open interior space. The process felt open-ended. It was an opportunity to get lost in thought and to give me an opportunity to reflect, muse and declutter my thinking. Then repeat. 40 days...
