About the Item

In Renato Paresce, born in Switzerland as the son of a Sicilian father and a Russian mother, we present one of the most complex personalities in Italian art of the first half of the twentieth century. He held a doctorate in physics and was a journalist, writer and painter. The story of his all-too-brief life is one of art, science and politics. After moving to Paris in 1912 to work as a scientist at the Institut des Poids et des Mesures, this self-taught artist very soon dedicated himself completely to painting and quickly began to engage with the avant-garde ideas of the day. Through his close contact and direct interaction with other artists in Paris ? he was influenced particularly by Picasso and Modigliani ? and also by virtue of his own considerable intellectual gifts, he developed the personal vision and immensely powerful means of expression that are the hallmark of his entire oeuvre. As a member of the group known as the ?Italiens de Paris? (which also included de Chirico , Savinio, De Pisis, Severini, Tozzi and Campigli), Paresce willingly embraced the ideas associated with the so-called "return to order? that was a leitmotif in the debate on figurative art at the time. Yet an exploration of geometry, cubist abstraction and expressive artistic models can also be seen in his works. As one of the leading artists in the internationally oriented Italian avant-garde, he regularly exhibited at the Venice Biennale and the Quadriennale in Rome and was a member of the Ecole de Paris, which took part in exhibitions at the Salon des Ind?pendants and the Salon des Tuileries. This work, executed in the 1920s, is very characteristic of Paresce in showing a cubist composition comprising various architectural elements, spatial structures and planes which articulate the work as a whole. Detachment and an almost melancholy mood are very typical of Paresce?s works during these years, and they are present here too. The concrete elements merely hint at reality, for they convey a sense of things that are lost and are present only through memory. In Paresce?s figurative universe an allusion to what is real and visible is wholly sufficient, and in this composition he deploys the whole arsenal of traditional motifs, encompassing figurative allegory, the still life arrangement and the metaphorical landscape. Instead of developing this into a deliberately enigmatic literary symbolism, Paresce creates a composition which, while derived to some extent from reality, nonetheless harbours within it a magical secret. There are thus two aspects to Paresce?s pictorial worlds, both in their entirety and in their individual elements: a real, visible truth, and a metaphysical truth that transcends all experience, all certain knowledge and anything that is unambiguously comprehensible.
