Samson Schames came from an old-established Frankfurt Jewish family. The art dealer Ludwig Schames, a major sponsor of Ernst-Ludwig Kirchner and other expressionists was his uncle and introduced him to art. Schames began his artistic studies at the Offenbach Art College but had to interrupt it because of conscription to military service. After the end of the First World War he studied at the Frankfurt College of Fine Arts. From 1928 he devoted himself intensively to painting. Together with his wife, he left Germany forever in 1939, after he had been able to show his pictures among the national socialists only in exhibitions of the Kulturbundes Deutscher Juden or in his own studio. In exile in London, Schames was active in the Freie Deutsche Kulturbund and was able to show his works in group and individual exhibitions. In 1948 he and his wife moved to New York, where he died in 1962. Samson Schames is the so-called missing generation . He wrote fairy tales and poems in Hebrew under the name Benzion Weinman, but when he began painting he dropped his last name and hyphenated his first, saying an artist needed only one name. Ben-Zion was a founding member of “The Ten: An Independent Group” The Ten” a 1930’s avant-garde group, Painted on anything handy. Ben-Zion often used cabinet doors (panels) in his work.
