About the Item

A horizontal crayon and graphite pencil drawing depicting a young girl and her black cat, with a bright orange, blue and green color palette by Nellie Mae Rowe. Rowe, a self-taught artist, created charming compositions of that combined her personal experiences with fantastical imagery, often incorporating religious stories and folk tales. In this work, a young girl holds her black cat, with Rowe showcasing her free expression and outsider style through loose strokes and the manipulation of scale. The work is possibly a self-portrait of the artist, as it looks strikingly similar to her work Tree Of Life (1979), in which Nellie Mae draws herself wearing a similar green cap with the same black cat imagery. The work comes frames, and has an inscription on the verso from Judith Alexander, a prominent collector of Rowe's. Nellie Mae Rowe (1900 - 1982) Girl with Her Black Cat, 1979 Crayon and graphite on paper 13 ½ x 10 in 25 x 22 in framed Nellie Mae Rowe was born in 1900 in Fayetteville, Georgia, the ninth of 10 children. Raised in a family of rural farmers, she would find time between chores, and even find places to hide, in order to continue creating. As a teenager and early adult, Rowe was married - and widowed - twice. After her second husband's death, she devoted herself fully to her art and became incredibly prolific, producing drawings, dolls, sculptures made of chewing gum, and assemblages made of discarded objects including egg cartons, marbles, and other trinkets. She produced so much work that it began to fill her house and her yard, and her neighbors deemed her an eccentric and a “fortune teller”. Although Rowe became well-known in her community, it was not until the mid-1970s that art collectors and curators began to take notice of her vast body of work. In 1978, she had her first solo exhibition at the Alexander Gallery in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1979, she left Georgia for the only time in her life to attend an exhibition of her work at the Parsons/Dreyfus Gallery in New York City. Her work attracted audiences with its striking and fantastical imagery, as well as its fixation with religious symbolism, social commentary, and the natural world. Rowe experimented with countless media, color palettes, and visual motifs, giving her work a longevity that continues to connect with new generations of collectors and curators. This Fall, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia opened “Really Free: The Radical Art of Nellie Mae Rowe,” the first major exhibition of her work in over two decades. Additionally, a documentary of Rowe’s life and work, “This World Is Not My Own,” is currently in post-production and hopes to debut soon. Rowe’s works may be found in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, among others.
