About the Item
Norman Meredith was British painter and illustrator, born in Liverpool (1909 - 1985) England. He studied at the Liverpool College of Art. He subsequently won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art, where he studied painting under Sir William Rothenstein. He won a traveling scholarship and studied in Italy, France and Germany. Between 1947 and 1974 he lectured in Art at University College, Aberystwyth and gave visiting lectures at St Martins School of Art.
Meredith has contributed numerous illustrations to a large number of magazines including Punch, Tatler, The Sketch and The Bystander. His career as a children's book illustrator began when Enid Blyton asked him to illustrate her stories at the end of World War II. Since then he has illustrated over one hundred books, using pen and ink with Normantone. He has also designed textiles for Moygashel and Crowson Fabrics, tin box designs for the Metal Box Co., Hammersmith, greetings cards and gift-wraps for the Cavendish Card Co. Since 1978 he has concentrated on humorous full-colour paintings of animals having anthropomorphic fun.
