Peter Paillou
Early Naturalistic Wildlife Animal Rendering of a Possible Capuchin Monkey

Mid 18th Century

About the Item

Early naturalistic wildlife rendering by the English artist Peter Paillou. The work features a delicately rendered depiction of a possible capuchin monkey from an 18th century specimen. Currently hung in a wooden, bamboo style frame with a cream matting. Visible Dimensions Without Frame: H 20.5 in. x W 14.5 in. Artist Biography: Peter Paillou was born in London into a Huguenot family and was recognized in his own time as an eminent ‘bird painter’. In 1744 he began to paint for Taylor White and worked for him for almost thirty years, painting chiefly birds and mammals. He painted as well for Robert More, Joseph Banks, and for the Welsh naturalist Thomas Pennant. Many of his paintings of birds were used as the basis for book illustrations, often engraved by his colleague and fellow Huguenot, Peter Mazell. Paillou was elected to the Society of Artists and in 1763 he exhibited ‘A Piece of Birds, in Watercolors; the Hen of the Wood and Cock of the Red Game’. In 1778, to considerable approval, he also showed a picture of ‘A Horned Owl from Peru’, completely made from feathers.

Pasha Muhammad Ali of Egypt (1805-1848) did it in 1827: he sent to Europe three magical spotted, horned creatures, each with a neck reaching the skies and legs as long as a house is high. One giraffe to King Charles X of France, one to Francis I of Austria and the most fabled one to King George IV of England.
