Sheer Deco Nude – 14-10-22, Drawing, Pencil/Colored Pencil on Paper

About the Item

Love for Sheer Textures This graphite pencil drawing ‘Sheer Deco Nude – 14-10-22’ is a deepening of my love for texture of fabrics. My Last drawing of Louise Brooks also bears witness to that and the one before that as well. Surely my satin fetishes already showed but now it was time to experiment with sheer fabrics on the female form. Some time ago I saw Pride and Prejudice, starring Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet. In a particular scene at Mr Darcy’s house she is gazing at a statue with a veiled face. I found that simply fascinating. Very classic, a bit corny perhaps but I don’t mind. I already explained I am not living in the era I should have been. I certainly will not burn my art works either like Damien Hirst, that’s for sure. Instead I gladly refer to art works of eras gone by. Deco or Not? Unfortunately I don’t know the origin of the reference picture so I cannot give someone credits. It must have been in the 1920s since I was searching for art deco photography. Not at all certain deco I must confess but my added cubist styling could be though. In my art statement to ‘Art Deco Nude – 02-10-22’ I give the generally accepted definition of the style. I state it once more: “Geometric styling of naturalistic forms with a degree of abstraction and streamlining. As a natural consequence it flows from bringing them back to the essence geometrically”. I came to realize I did just that, wouldn’t you agree? Variation in Repetition, Repetition in Variation In art class I often tell students about the principle ‘variation in repetition, repetition in variation’. A further explanation on the subject can be found here. As to this drawing I can mention the repetition of angles in which certain contours manifest themselves. They are counterbalanced by other contours placed in a different angle and thus serve as a variation. by this principle eyes are reassured because the artist offer them structure though which the work can be read. However, too much repetition can be boring and too much variation only creates incomprehensable entropy. As an artist I see it as my task to employ this principle optimally and offer viewers a sound interpretation. I try to give meaning to representations and forms even if they seem meaninglessly chaotic in real life. Movement Another graphite pencil drawing ‘Art Deco Nude – 23-08-22’, inspired by again a smashing picture by Walter Bird. The last drawing shows a seated lady. Contrasts are always on my mind though. Not in the style but in movement this time. What attracked me in the motif was the angular position of the female form. I am not sure whether she stood still like this but it looks like some ritual dance. I can ask my Spanish model Julia who is a dancer to strikes these kinds of poses. All induced by Walter! Extrapolate Them The bodily features almost took up a perfect square. However, I wanted to make sure I wasn’t going to end up with too much negative space around her. Therefor, extrapolating her features into the negative space came to my aid. The planes that are born from this process support the overall expression of her moves, I think. Some of them I hached up to complete darkness, other to midtones. Vice versa I did in the positive form as well. The most contrasting tonal values (completely light / dark) I placed within the body. I wanted only mildly distracting or diffuse the viewer’s attention. This way I found a perfect balance. Emotional and Expressive Someone on called...

Just Another Artistic Motif This graphite pencil drawing ˜Venus Lamenting “ 13-01-23 is a special one. It is an indictment of prudishness. My second to last one ˜Roundism “ 30-12-22 apparently shook up a bunch of people. Comments varied from great to ˜yet another tit pic. There also were prudes from various countries who scorned me for the subject nudity anyway. Throughout the years I became used to these reactions somehow. I also take into account the fact people from each and any nation are present on social media nowadays. With this variety comes a whole set of different opinions and views of life. I cherish them all. That is, as long as they cherish my opinion back. If they dont, then this art statement is for all those who lack the word reciprocity in their dictionary. Climbing the Barricades Personally I think the nude can be as much an artistic motif as any other. In fact I dont complain in the least about a world of other motifs. One could like to depict golden retrievers, red roses and other darling, save and sound themes. I see them on a daily basis on Instagram and Facebook among others. I probably wouldnt have made a big fuss because of contempt shown in the past. Thats what an artist is all about. I even like to provoke with my nudes a bit. A bit of sexiness but not too much. Just to be able to deny the presence of too much of it by underligning artistic aspects as well. Hmm, a bit of risque here an there. I love it! Why climb the barricades once again? Heres why.
