About the Item

This artwork titled "Woman in Purple" from the "Colcha" series, 1989, is a watercolor and ink on hand made paper by noted American artist Amado Maurilio Pena, b.1943. It is hand signed and dated in pencil by the artist at the lower left corner. The artwork (image) size is 21 x 21 inches, sheet size is 22 x 21 inches, framed size is 34.35 x 34.25 inches. Beautifully custom framed in a mahogany frame, with fabric matting and light purple color backing. It is in over all excellent condition, there is a small restored tear at the upper right, barely visible. About the artist: Amado Pena Jr.'s art focuses on Hispanic and Native American figures and has been described as capturing the essence of the Southwest. Pena, a mestizo of Mexican and Yaqui Indian descent, was born in 1943 and raised in Laredo, Texas. He earned B.A. and M.A. degrees at Texas A & I University in Kingsville, Texas and was an art teacher in Texas public schools for sixteen years. Pena is known for his humanitarian efforts, and his fund-raising activities have benefited charities such as the March of Dimes, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, Native American Rights Fund and the Mexican American Legal and Educational Fund. The Amado and JB Pena "Art Has Heart" Foundation, established in 1994, provides opportunities for low and modest income students in Texas, New Mexico, Colorado and Arizona to further their education in the arts. According to Pena, "I feel blessed having seen and touched the beautiful things that speak so proudly of who we are. Our gifts to the world are our history, our art." Canyon de Chelley, Monument Valley, Spider Rock, Enchanted Mesa, Acoma, Black Mesa -- these are names that evoke an aura of mystery and hint at the birth of legends. These sites are part of an enduring, rugged landscape that speaks of the ancient heritage of a region now known as Arizona and New Mexico." This land, the people who live there and their native crafts, are the threads in a rich cultural tapestry that is the inspiration for the works of Amado M. Peña, Jr. Using this trilogy of imagery, Peña studies the interrelation and integration of these entities, giving each equal importance. With bold color, form and the dynamics of composition, Peña communicates his vision of a land, a people, and their art. He is a prolific artist with restless, creative energy that keeps him at work in his studios in Santa Fe and Austin. A master printer, his serigraphs are noted for bold color schemes and strong graphic use of lines. His etchings convey quiet elegance in fine lines and soft color. The drama of his paintings is heightened by an intensity of hue and unexpected spatial relationships. Abstractions of the landscape merge with exaggerated human forms; blanket and pottery patterns further echo the shapes of the land. Pena is recognized as an Artisan of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe of Arizona and is dedicated to furthering the public's knowledge and interest in the Tribe, its art, its history, and its culture. "Brick Layers" WPA American Scene Mid 20th Century Modern Drawing Men Working. 21 x 15 inches Watercolor on paper. c. 1938. Signed lower left. BIO David Fredenthal (1914 - 1958) was one ot America's most respected watercolor artists. He was famous for his bold, intensely vigorous and complex paintings and drawings that expressed his deep feeling for excitement with life and living. He was a draftsman with seemingly a special gift for catching anything, physically and emotionally on the spot, and he never went anywhere without three or four loaded pens and a sketchbook in his pocket. As part of the WPA project he executed a number of murals including the Sports Pavilion on the Heinz Building of the New York World's Fair 1939. Some of his fresco and mural techniques were inspired by his friendship with Diego Rivera who had admired and encouraged him in the early 1930's. After he won a traveling scholarship to Europe from The Museum of Modern Art at age 19, he was the recipient of two Guggenheim grants in Painting. He had his first solo exhibition at the Downtown Gallery in New York in 1937 at age 23, and many others after that including the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1947. Because of Fredenthal's prodigious drawing gifts, he was chosen by Erskine Caldwell to illustrate his novel "Tobacco Road" in 1940. He was a War Artist Correspondent for both the State Department (the European and Asian fronts) and Life magazine from 1943 to 1946 and his work was featured in Life magazine regularly during the war and after until the end of his life. Also featured in Life in 1956 were drawings that Fredenthal had vividly recorded on his sketch pad, of the entire filming of the movie, The Pride and the Passion, starring Cary Grant, Sophia Loren, and Frank Sinatra, along the treacherous mountain passes of Spain. Though he was fiercely committed to an art that expressed deeply human social values and issues and was quite hostile to abstraction, he was friendly with a number of abstract artists such as David Smith, Ad Reinhardt, Philip Guston, Paul Feeley, and Herman Cherry.
