Christopher Paul Cobb
"Blue Hair Woman and a Bird" Minimalist Watercolor #3 by Christopher Paul Cobb

1995

About the Item

This very unusual and introspective watercolor is a contemplative piece that invites viewers to ponder the nature of memories and how they come back into our brains. The artist creates a calm atmosphere through the use of pastel hues. The woman is overrun by a memory that hurt her feelings; either it was a chance encounter that ended or a bad one. It can be regrets and disappointed hopes, or possibly a late lover, reincarnated, and visiting the woman as a shadow. Unearthing the innermost feelings that linger there, he unveils her inner thoughts, bringing them to the surface through this shadow jumping on her. Christopher Paul Cobb uses watercolor to add fluidity and subtlety to the piece, creating a sense of introspection and evoking questions about how we remember and understand our past. The artwork is a powerful exploration of the freedom offered by watercolor painting and a unique way of expressing it. Christopher Paul Cobb is an American artist born in the 20th Century. He is the grandson of baseball great player Ty Cobb. The piece is signed and dated 1995.

  • "Paddling Woman" Watercolor Minimalist Painting #1 by Christopher Paul Cobb
    Located in Pasadena, CA
"Paddling Woman" is a minimalist watercolor that captures the essence of the human experience. Through the delicate strokes of a brush dipped in watercolor, the artist has conveyed the inner turmoil of the main subject, which may be remembering or dreaming of past or previous journeys. Her long, curly hair cascading down her shoulders symbolizes the wildness within us all. The simple black ink lines that create the birds and ships in the background add a touch of innocence and childlike wonder, evoking a sense of nostalgia for a simpler time. The signature is in the right corner, and it is dated (September 1995). It sits in a simple black wood frame. Christopher Paul Cobb is an American artist born in the 20th Century. He is the grandson of baseball great player Ty Cobb.

  • Black Girl Portrait - Gouache by Max Turner
    Located in Pasadena, CA
A certain enigma surrounds Max Turner: he possesses both undeniable mastery and the humility of a great artist. Endowed with musicality and vibrancy in his brushwork, he remains a man of unassuming nature, far removed from the realm of trendy art galleries. His experience as an art instructor has sharpened his acuity for studying and capturing the essence of figure models, nurtured by his lifelong fascination with the human visage. In this gouache portrait, one can sense that with each stroke, he repeats a gesture as if it was the very first time, capturing that fleeting fraction of a second, an emotion, a secret of his subject to infuse into his canvases. One can feel the artist’s pleasure...

  • Denis Auguste Raffet (1804-1860) Studies of characters, drawing and watercolor

Denis Auguste Raffet (1804-1860) Studies of characters Black pencil and watercolor on paper 18.5 x 25.5 cm Stamp of the Raffet Estate Sale (1911) on the lower right In good condition, foxings on the original mount Framed 34 x 40 cm Denis Auguste Marie Raffet (2 March 1804 – 16 February 1860) was a French illustrator and lithographer. He was a student of Nicolas Toussaint Charlet, and was a retrospective painter of the Empire. At an early age he was apprenticed to a wood turner, but took up the study of art at evening classes. At the age of 18 he entered the workshop of Cabanel, where he applied his skill to the decoration of china, and where he met Rudor, from whom he received instruction in lithography, in the practice of which he was to rise to fame. He then entered the École des Beaux-Arts, but returned to lithography in 1830 when he produced on stone his famous designs of Lützen, Waterloo, Le bal, La revue, and Les adieux de la garrison, by which his reputation became immediately established.[ Raffet's chief works were his lithographs of the Napoleonic campaigns, from Egypt to Waterloo, vigorous designs inspired by ardent patriotic enthusiasm. In this endeavor he was a contemporary of other French artist-lithographers of Napoleon and the French army including Hippolyte Bellangé, Horace Vernet, and Nicolas Toussaint Charlet. As an illustrator his activity was prodigious, the list of works illustrated by his crayon amounting to about forty-five, among which are Béranger's poems, the History of the Revolution by Adolphe Thiers, the History of Napoleon by de Norvins, the great Walter Scott by Auguste Defauconpret, the French Plutarch and Frédéric Bérat's Songs. He went to Rome in 1849, and was present at the siege of Rome, which he made the subject of some lithographs, and followed the Italian campaign of 1859, of which he left a record in his Episodes de la campagne d'Italie de 1859. His portraits in pencil...
