About the Item
This piece titled "A KAJUAL DAY IN TAIPEI" is an original piece by Danielle Clough and is made by watercolor, cotton thread, wool, etoile on cotton, in solid kiaat. This piece measures 10.25"h x 10.25"w and is framed with museum glass.
The threads that link the ancient and the modern are an excellent starting point to describe the work of Cape Town-based artist, Danielle Clough. Danielle’s colorful, delicate embroidery celebrates the joining of the old with the new in a wistful and playful manner that is thoroughly modern in approach, yet nostalgic at heart. She utilizes a craft that is perceived as archaic but takes inspiration from current pop culture icons and the timeless beauty of nature. Her choice of materials also reflects this fascination with time and her vibrant picture-scapes are just as likely to adorn a vintage tennis racquet as they are a rusty chain link fence or a brand-new pair of Gucci sneakers.
Danielle Clough’s exhibition Some Strings Attached explores expression composition in her portrait series, each carefully formed in a vibrant, and colorful palette, up close and intimate. Based in her hometown of Cape Town, South Africa, her practice began with a background in advertising and fashion design, which involved interpreting images by their feel and their formation, whether it is a film still or a captivating advertisement in a magazine. This skill led to an intuitive process where Clough was able to explore the relationship of light and color in a wide range of subjects, like still life and abstraction, thus becoming the basis for her newest collection highlighting her studies of the human figure. Her process-intensive portraits require carefully chosen materials to inform the sentimental connections she creates, juxtaposing the fluidity and spontaneity of watercolor with the patience and deliberate nature of stitching. The sharp contrast of solid thread against open forms of watercolor creates a tension of feeling present but fragmented, a feeling Clough is familiar with. “The journey of creating this body of work has been finding comfort in missing my family and what it means to be between spaces consistently, being free of judgment and allowed to be oneself despite the pieces that are not perfect or complete.” Clough equates the fulfillment her art practice gives to the love she has for family living overseas. Although they are close in spirit, the distance gives Clough a sense of feeling incomplete, just like when she visits them, she is happy but away from her home, therefore unable to be present in both spaces. The ever-constant feeling of longing is reflected in her work, paying excruciating detail to facial expressions, relationship with light, and finding meaning in small moments. For her ongoing Girl Dust series, Clough holds on to fiber scraps in her studio as remnants of her practice, still holding value outside of a finished art piece. She makes a careful arrangement of thread, textiles, and the occasional pompom to create stunning portals of texture and color. Some Strings Attached will feature the first instance of Clough combining her portrait series with her Girl Dust series as she will be arranging a figure within the scraps of the creative process.

- Sisters #2 (Contemporary Vertical Indigo Panel of Hands and Botanicals, Waxed)By Valerie HammondLocated in Hudson, NY"Sisters #2", 2019 by Valerie Hammond 73 x 34.5 inches unframed Pigment, Color Pencil, Wax, Glass Beads, and thread on Japanese Rice Paper Coated with Beeswax Vertical, indigo panels that are unframed, can be installed with magnets, but framing is recommended. In Valerie Hammond’s series of wax drawings, protection is two-fold: the artist (previously) encases dried flowers and ferns in a thin layer of wax, preserving their fragile tissues long after they’ve been plucked from the ground. In outlining a pair of hands, she also secures a memory, or rather, “the essence of a gesture and the fleeting moment in which it was made.” Centered on limbs lying flat on Japanese paper, the ongoing series dates back to the 1990s, when Hammond made the first tracing “partly in response to the death of a dear friend, whose beautiful hands I often found myself remembering.” She continued by working with family and friends, mainly women and children, to delineate their wrists, palms, and fingers. Today, the series features dozens of works that are comprised of either hands tethered to the dried botanics, which sprout outward in wispy tendrils, or others over layed with thread and glass beads. Although the delicate pieces began as a simple trace, Hammond shares that she soon began to overlay the original drawing with pressed florals, creating encaustic assemblages that “echoed the body’s bones, veins, and circulatory systems.” She continued to experiment with the series by introducing various techniques, including printmaking, Xerox transfers, and finally Photoshop inversions, that distorted the original rendering...Category
