About the Item
"Jeune Femme Assise" is an original pencil drawing by Georges d'Espagnat. The title translates to "young woman sitting" and as indicated a young woman sits facing the viewer with her body curved inward. Her arms are reaching down to her ankles, perhaps pulling on a stocking. The intimate scene does not give the impression of any sort of violation. The young woman seems more than aware of our presence and appears unbothered. Though simple in its composition the drawing in no way lacks substance and technique. The natural curves of the young woman are expertly carved into the paper with the blue pencil. There is weight, light, movement, texture, and more. Though its size may cause one to gaze past it in a crowded gallery it is in no way any less valuable, and in many ways is a pinnacle of the same techniques all art is built on.
The artist signed the piece in the lower right.

French painter, illustrator, and stage designer.
Disdaining the traditional art schools, he studied part-time at the Académie Colarossi in Paris under Gustave-Claude-Etienne Courtois (1852-1923) and Jean-André Rixens (1846-1924) but was mostly self-taught. In 1891 he exhibited at the Salon des Refusés and the following year at the Salon des Indépendants.
His early works, such as Suburban Railway showed a strong debt to Impressionism. He was a friend of Renoir as well as of Paul Signac, Henri Edmond Cross, Louis Valtat, and later Maurice Denis, Bonnard, and Vuillard.
In 1898 he visited Morocco where he painted such works as Moroccan Horseman. After his return to France, he concentrated on studies of nature, paintings of women, children, and flowers, and decorative projects for private patrons.
In 1904 he exhibited at the Salon d’Automne, becoming its Vice-President in 1935. Between 1905 and 1910 he made several trips with Valtat to visit Renoir on the Côte d’Azur as well as traveling to Spain, Italy, Portugal, Britain, Germany, and elsewhere. In 1906 he illustrated Remy de Gourmont’s book Sixtine, published in Paris.
In the early 1910s, he painted a number of portraits including several musician friends, including Albert Roussel by which time his work was more simplified, fluid, and intimate. In 1914 he provided the decor for the production of Alfred de Musset’s play Fantasio at the Théâtre des Batignolles in Paris.
After working in a camouflage unit during World War I, in 1920 d’Espagnat bought a country house in the Quercy region and over the next decade painted numerous landscapes and interiors there.
During the 1930s he worked in various media. He illustrated Alphonse Daudet’s L’Immortel (Paris, 1930) and also produced theatre designs. In 1936 he decorated the Mairie in Vincennes; in 1938 the Palais de Justice in Toulouse and in 1939 the ceiling of the Salle Victor Hugo in the Palais du Luxembourg in Paris.
Ironically, considering his earlier attitudes, from 1936 to 1940 he was a professor at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Though disrupted by World War II, he continued to paint until his death and with his pupil Suzanne Humbert, illustrated Francis Jammes’s Clairières Dans le Ciel, 1902-1906.

Georges d'Espagnat
Georges d’Espagnat was born in 1870 in Melun, France. He was a painter, muralist, illustrator and theater designer. His family moved to Paris in the 1880s and at the age of 18 he declined the academic training of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and chose instead to independently study the works of the Old Masters in the Louvre and attend classes at the free academy. In 1891 d’Espagnat began exhibiting at the Salon des Refusees and in the following year exhibited four paintings at the Salon des Independants. He later exhibited at the Salon of the Societe Nationale as well. Although associated with many of the greatest names in 20th century art, and though his work has at various times been identified as Fauve, Nabis or Impressionist, he retained his own individuality. He was influential in the art circles of his time with the likes of Matisse, Gauguin, Picasso, Pissarro and Chagall. d’Espagnat also became closely acquainted with many of the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists including Renoir, Vuillard, Andre, Bonnard and Denis. In 1895 he had his first solo show in Paris and three years later a show at Durand-Ruel Gallery. He was part of a group exhibition in 1907 at the Marcel Bernheim Gallery along with Bonnard, Cezanne, Matisse, Pissarro, Rouault, Suerat and Toulouse-Lautrec while in 1926 his works were a part of another exhibition at the same gallery along with Andre, Bonnard, Braque, Chagall, Matisse, Picasso and Signac. In 1903 d’Espagnat was one of the founding members of the Salon d’Automne and, a year later, became the vice president. In 1906 he collaborated on the illustrations for Remy de Gourmont’s Sixtine, and later worked with Alphonse Daudet on his book, L’Immortel. Traveling extensively throughout his lifetime, D’Espagnat visited Britain, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Morocco and Spain. His work can be found in many museums including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Musee Royal des Beaux-Arts, Brussels; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Art Institute, Chicago; the Pushkin Museum, Moscow and the Musee d’Orsay.

In January 1894, having completed his studies at the Lycée Corneille in Rouen, he was sent to study at the Faculty of Law of the University of Paris, but within a year he was devoting most of his time to art, already contributing lithographs to Parisian illustrated newspapers such as Assiette au beurre.
