About the Item

Study for "The Guardians" (1931) charcoal on paper, 98 x 124 cm Signed and dated lower right 'G. Ceracchini 1931'. On the back is the study for the painting On the River (II Quadriennale di Roma, 1935) Notes: Preparatory study for The Guardians, a painting exhibited at the 18th Venice Biennale, 1932; kept at the Galleria Internazionale d'Arte Moderna di Venezia - Ca' Pesaro. Provenance: Rome, private collection In 1925, Gisberto Ceracchini took up studio and residence in Villa Strohl-Fern, remaining there for the rest of his life. His painting fits perfectly into the canons of the return to order, in particular that reworking of the purist styles of the 14th and 15th century. Following in the footsteps of Carlo Carrà (1881-1966), he became the interpreter of a neo-primitivism that takes up point by point the poetics of artists such as Giotto, Masaccio and Paolo Uccello. His is a manifesto of the return to archaic painting, also imbued with an often dreamlike and surreal rarefaction. In 1926 and 1929 he was present at the Novecento exhibitions, wanted as a 'Roman' artist by Margherita Sarfatti. In fact, Gisberto Ceracchini can be considered one of the major representatives of a radical neo-trecentism, together with Francesco Di Cocco (1900-1989), although the latter is more intellectualistic than Ceracchini's rural and simple vision. In this profound primitivist research, at the end of the 1920s, the painter found similarities with the representatives of the Scuola di via Cavour, inviting Scipione (1904-1933), Mario Mafai (1902-1965) and Marino Mazzacurati (1907-1969), together with Di Cocco, to exhibit at the Circolo di Roma in Palazzo Doria in 1929.
