Hans Hofmann
Crucifixion

ca. 1925

About the Item

Crucifixion, ca. 1925, by Hans Hofmann (1880-1966) Pencil on paper 17 x 14 inches unframed (43.18 x 35.56 cm) Description: This figure drawing by Hans Hofmann provides a unique look into the artist's figurative work that predated much of his more abstract expressionist work later in his career. Though meant to resemble two human forms, the two nudes in this drawing are still broken up into distinct, geometric shapes that make them look more compositional than human. Hofmann's artistic leniency towards abstraction, therefore, can be seen even in his more representational works. In this image Hofmann also renders a complex interplay of faith, human emotions, and relationships. The composition and placement of the figures evoke an abstracted and fragmented crucifixion. With the left figure's arms raised above his or her limp head, Hofmann vaguely hints at a scene of despair, though the figure on the right has a surprisingly calm expression.
