Harold Town

About the Item

Harold Town (1924-1990) remains one of the most accomplished and fascinating characters from the "Painters Eleven" group. While Town coined the group's name (based on the number of artists who simply attended their first meeting) his output was diverse and ever-changing. By the time the group disbanded, Town had established that he was restlessly prolific and explorative, regularly trying new media and modes. He was nicknamed the Picasso of Canada due to his constant reinvention. While Town made a significant contribution to Canadian abstraction, he also completed figurative works throughout his career, with a renewed commitment in the late 1960s. His "Toy Horse" series is arguably his most successful and iconic body of figurative work. Inspired by a Christmas gift, Town reimagined the subject through a significant number of variations during 1976-1983, ranging from stylized ink drawings to meticulous almost wire-like geometric designs. This dynamic work on paper is a striking example from this series, depicting the subject with bold, exaggerated forms, and whimsical details. Today, Town's work is represented in prestigious collections across North America including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Museum of Modern Art (New York), and the Guggenheim (New York). • Joyce Wieland "Marie Antoinette"
    By Joyce Wieland
    Located in Toronto, Ontario
Joyce Wieland (1931-1998) is one of the most accomplished and versatile Canadian artists. She achieved a level of commercial and critical success in her lifetime that was exceptional for a woman during an era in a male-dominated field. Notably, she was the first female artist to have a solo exhibition at the National Gallery (Ottawa) in 1971 and the Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto) in 1987. Although Wieland was an artist who was always drawing, she launched her career as a painter. Always experimenting, her art practice expanded to incorporate a range of media and materials, from textile works to film. In New York City, she was best known as an experimental filmmaker. In the mid 1960s Wieland began to embrace more representational and narrative elements in her work. Inspired by comic books, and her background in film as an animator, Wieland embraced figuration albeit clearly influenced by Pop Art. One of the reoccurring motifs in Wieland's oeuvre is playing with and subverting icons of femininity. In this work Wieland presents icons inspired by the French Queen Marie-Antoinette: a jewelry or hat box, a hairbrush, a medallion. The artist seems to be willing to give a make-over to the Queen. In the "nice medallion painting...

Figurative drawing of a costumed man with two moons on handmade teal colored paper "Der Fled Maus", made by Kahn & Selesnick in 2011 mixed media, graphite, and pastel handmade paper 17 x 17 inches in walnut vintage wood frame with 8ply mat 7.5 x 7.5 inches unframed This whimsical mixed media drawing on handmade teal colored paper was made by the creative duo Nicholas Kahn & Richard Selesnick as part of their series "Truppe Fledermaus", wherein the artists celebrate the carnivalesque with a cast of peculiar costumed characters. In this illustration, a cloaked figure stands in front of a door with the moon, in two different phases, appearng in the background. The artists' highly stylized approach adds an almost vintage touch. The drawing is complemented by a simple vintage walnut frame, and a sturdy wire across the back provides for easy hanging. About Truppe Fledermaus: Kahn & Selesnick’s latest project follows a fictitious cabaret troupe – Truppe Fledermaus (Bat Troupe) – who travel the countryside staging absurd and inscrutable performances in abandoned landscapes for an audience of no one. The playful but dire message presented by the troupe is of impending ecological disaster, caused by rising waters and a warming planet, the immediate consequences of which include the extinction of the Bat, a shamanistic figure representing both nature and humanity. In one sense, the entire cabaret troupe can be seen as a direct reflection of the artists themselves, both entities employing farce and black humor to engage utterly serious concerns.
