About the Item

Charcoal on wove paper mounted on Kraft paper. Each Individually framed with matte black wood frame (face: 3/4 Inches; height: 32 in. x width: 17 in.; outside frame depth: 1 3/8 in. Artist bio: Maurice Newman was born 1898 in Panevezus, Lithuania. Beginning in 1910 he began a two-year apprenticeship in photography. In 1912 he moved to Switzerland and used his command of Russian, Lithuanian, Polish, German and Yiddish to earn his living in St. Moritz and Davos delivering messages between clandestine lovers. In 1913 he spent a year in England before moving to South Africa. There he worked as a re-toucher and photographer while attending the Johannesburg School of Art. In 1920 he fulfilled his long harbored intention of moving to the United States. During the 1920s and 1930s he worked as a photography re-toucher and commercial artist. He had settled in Boston with his wife and daughter, Rachel, while continuing his art studies at the Vesper George School of Fine Art and the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts. In 1935 he joined the Works Progress Administration (WPA) set up by the Roosevelt Administration to provide support and Commissions for artists at the height of the U.S. Great Depression. During the late 1930s much of Newman's painting focused on studies of the human figure and land- and seascapes in and around the cities of Rockport, Gloucester, and other locations on the Cape Ann, Massachusetts, coast. In 1938 the family moved to Rockport. Newman also created dioramas and miniature models which were exhibited at the Children's Museum in Boston, the 1939 World's Fair in New York, and the Essex Institute in Salem. In 1942 he was hired by the U.S. Engineer Research and Development Laboratory (ERDL) at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, as head of three-dimensional models for the US Air Force in Europe during World War II. Newman's most important work was his creation of the memorial aluminum sculpture to the Jewish martyrs of the Warsaw Ghetto, Poland, which was installed in front of the Jewish Community Center in Kansas City, Missouri in 1963.
