- Au Cimetière Monsieur- Pencil and Watercolor on Paper by F. Picabia - 1931By Francis PicabiaLocated in Roma, ITAu Cimetière Monsieur... is a black pencil and watercolor drawing realized by Francis Picabia in 1931. Hand signed lower left, with title lower right. A certificate of inclusion in the Catalog Raisonné being prepared by the Picabia Committee, dated 30 October 2019, will be delivered in original along with the work. Drawing originally realized by Picabia to illustrate the important volume "Le Peseur d'Ames" by André Maurois, published by Editions Antoine Roche in 1931. Though specifically realized for the volume, the drawing was not selected for publication and remained in the artist's personal collection. Cm. 27,4x22. Good conditions. Francis Picabia (1879-1953) was born in Paris to a french mother and a Spanish father who was chancellor at the Cuban embassy in Paris. He had a comfortable childhood, even though he was emotionally troubled. He studied at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts. At the beginning of his career, from 1908 to 1913, he was strongly influenced first by the Barbizon School and by Alfred Sisley and Camille Pissarro, then by impressionism, cubism and finally abstractionism. Around 1911 he joined the Puteaux Group which he met in the studio of Jacques Villon in the village of Puteaux. He then became friends with the artist Marcel Duchamp. Some members of the group were Apollinaire, Albert Gleizes, Roger de La Fresnaye, Fernand Léger and Jean Metzinger. From 1913 to 1915 Picabia was often in New York. These years can be identified as the proto-Dada period, which consists mostly of the so-called mechanical portraits (portraits méchaniques): these works ironically proposed mechanistic themes of random tangles of metal parts, paintings and drawings of machines. All these mechanisms on the one hand mocked the cult of the machine, on the other they alluded to sexual intercourse...Category

- Clifford Ellis Corsham Court Hens Chicken Shed c. 1950 mid century watercolourBy Clifford EllisLocated in London, GBWe acquired a series of paintings and posters from Clifford and Rosemary Ellis's studio. To find more scroll down to "More from this Seller" and below it click on "See all from this Seller." Clifford Ellis (1907-1985) Hens by a chicken shed at Corsham Court Watercolour 37x56cm Provenance: the family of the artist, by descent. Here Ellis paints the hens at Corsham Court together with their chicken shed. Born in Bognor in Sussex and trained at St Martin’s School of Art and Regent Street Polytechnic, Ellis was a graphic artist and illustrator who is best known for the posters he produced for London Transport during the 1930s. He generally collaborated with his wife Rosemary – whom he married in 1931 – on their posters. The General Post Office, Shell, and The Empire Marketing Board were also clients for their posters. They signed their posters C&RE, their initials being in alphabetical order and they are readily recognisable by their ebullient use of colour and form. Employed during the war as a camoufleur, along with so many other artists, Clifford was also an official war artist, serving with the Grenadier Guards. Rosemary, meanwhile, was an artist for the Recording Britain project. Following the war they trained art teachers at Bath Academy of Art. They also designed a series of nearly one hundred book jackets for Collins New Naturalist series, published between 1945 and 1982. Clifford Ellis studied illustration at the Regent Street Polytechnic, an institution that specialised in ’practical trade classes’, from 1924-27. He went on to design book covers (notably for Collins’ ‘New Naturalist’ series) and posters for London Transport, the General Post Office, Shell-Mex, the Empire Marketing Board and J. Lyons & Co., along with his wife, Rosemary Ellis, whom he married in 1931 while he was teaching at the Polytechnic. The couple’s poster designs combine striking colour with bold typography and depict stylised scenes of the countryside, birds and animals. In the 1930s London Transport commissioned over forty posters a year from well-known artists such as Laura Knight, CRW Nevinson...Category

Signed and dated "Warnick 1982" in the lower right corner. Signed, titled, and dated with materials information on verso. Presented in a silver aluminum frame. Frame size: 23.5"H x 31.25"W Paper size: 23.25"H x 31"W Elsa Warnick (American, 1942-2013) was born and raised in Tacoma, Washington.
