[CHINESE EXPORT WATERCOLOURS ON PITH PAPER]. - Botanical Studies

1890's

About the Item

[CHINESE EXPORT WATERCOLOURS ON PITH PAPER]. A Group of 10 Flowers and Butterflies. mid to late nineteeenth century. A fine group of Chinese export watercolours showing flowers and butterflies. 10 hand painted water-colours on pith paper, edged in turquoise silk ribbon and laid on paper. Framed and glazed, overall dimensions: 39.5cm by 27cm by 2cm. Pith came into use for painting to satisfy the increasing demand for small, inexpensive and easily transported souvenirs, following the massive growth in the China Trade in the first quarter of the nineteenth century. Paintings in oils, on board and canvas were costly and difficult to carry home. Earlier and more prestigious export water-colours had often been on a larger scale and painted on fine Chinese paper or on paper imported from Europe. The albums of pith paintings (and later the little glass-fronted boxes) were inexpensive, light, easy to pack and gave the pictures some protection on the long voyage home. Because many were sold in albums and hence protected from the light, they retain their bright colours to this day. Pith comes from the central column of spongy cellular tissue in the stem of a small tree called Tetrapanax Papyrifera, native to south-west China. It has had a variety of uses, some going back many centuries. At the imperial court both men and women wore coloured flowers made from pith in their hair. For use in painting, it is cut by hand with a knife into thin sheets from short lengths of the spongy tissue. Because of the nature of pith and its cellular structure, the gouache used by the Chinese sat on the surface allowing fine detail and bright colour.

Wedding Procession is a colored raised line woodcut, done in 1924 by Bertha Boynton Lum (American, 1869 – 1954) . The image measures 13-7/8 x 10-1/8". Raised line impression and painted by the artist, while living in China. Image 13.25"H x 8.75"W Sheet 14.75"H x 10.75" (approx) Signed Lower center in pencil "Bertha Lum" New acid free mat included. Bertha Lum was fascinated by the legends and mythology of the Orient and wrote extensively about them. These legends provided the subject matter for many of her works in woodcut. Bertha Boynton Lum was an American artist known for helping popularize the Japanese and Chinese woodblock print outside of Asia. In May 1869, Lum was born as Bertha Boynton Bull in Tipton, Iowa. Lum's father was Joseph W. Bull (1841–1923), a lawyer and her mother was Harriet Ann Boynton (1842–1925), a school teacher. Both of Lum's parents were amateur artists. Lum had a sister and two brothers, Clara, Carlton, and Emerson. Education and career: In 1890 she lived in Duluth and listed her occupation as artist. She enrolled in the design department of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1895. A few years later she studied stained glass with Anne Weston and attended the Frank Holme School of Illustration. From November 1901 to March 1902, she studied figure drawing at the Art Institute of Chicago and was influenced by the Japanese techniques of Arthur Wesley Dow in his book Composition, which was published in 1899. Lum married Burt F. Lum, a corporate lawyer from Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1903. They spent their seven-week honeymoon in Japan, where she searched for a print maker who could teach her the traditional ukiyo-e method. Toward the end of her stay in Japan, she found a shop that reproduced old prints. The shop sold her some woodcutting tools...

  • Charles George Nicholls - Watercolour 1805 - Palace on the Ganges, Anglo - India
    By Charles George Nicholls
    Located in Meinisberg, CH
Charles George Nicholls (English, flourished 1792 - 1818) Picturesque Gangetic Landscape in India • Circa 1805 • Watercolour on thick paper, ca. 20 x 49.5 cm • Mounted behind a modern passpartout, visible image ca. 19 x 49 cm • Original Georgian frame (newly glassed) , ca. 39 x 70 cm • Signed lower left corner Worldwide shipping is complimentary - There are no additional charges for handling & delivery. Very detailed watercolor painting - note how light reflecting off the water surface was skillfully created by scratching the paper surface. Charles G(J)eorge Nicholls, originally a merchant seaman, was a contemporary of Thomas and William Daniell, and like them, he made several sketching trips whilst in India, including up the Dohab, which is from where this drawing appears to be of. He worked as draughtsman for the East India Company based in Calcutta and was also employed by the Office of the Surveyor-General, where he was involved in the Survey of Orissa, South Bengal. Unfortunately bad eyesight truncated his career and he returned to England in 1815. Nicholls signed his middle name’George’ using a ‘G’, aswell as a ‘J.’ Nicholl’s work surfaces from time to time and can command high prices at auction – especially for his Indian landscapes. For example, a drawing by Nicholls ( a page of an album) was auctioned by Sotheby's (Valuable Printed Books, June 1997, Lot 407), or a series of water coulours were auctioned by Christie's (Visions of India, June 1998) and in September 2000 two small drawings were auctioned again by Christie's (Exploration & Travel with Visions of India). Also, I know there is a unsigned water colour titled 'Bridge over the River Bama by Benares' in the collection of the Oriental & India Office Collections (OICO) at the British Library. Here is a rare opportunity, to acquire a large format watercolor (double album page), featuring a very impressive view of what India looked like over 200 years ago - seen through the eyes of a skilled artist, in employment by the famous East India Company. I also think that as India opens up more and more rapidly to the world and enjoys increasing prosperity, the interest in cultural heritage, trophy objects like the one I am offering here today, will find their way back to India, into a collection or onto a wall in a chic office or luxurious apartment. The water colour drawing...
