About the Item

This beautiful, atmospheric British 1920’s watercolour landscape painting is by noted artist Albert Goodwin. He was championed by famed art critic John Ruskin who took him on tour in Europe and Goodwin made numerous sketches that he later developed into paintings. This painting is entitled Altdorf lower left and signed lower right. Altdorf is a historic town and municipality in Switzerland, surrounded by superb mountains. Perhaps Goodwin and Ruskin visited it during their travels together. The view is from the edge of the town, looking down at houses and a church. Beyond is low lying mist and towering mountains with a moon above. The whole scene is bathed in moonlight and the palette is muted greens and blues giving a mystical nocturnal feel. A really lovely nocturnal watercolour perfectly capturing a moonlit night in the Swiss alps and one of his best works form this artist whose influences were Turner and The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Housed in a 19th century gilt frame. Signed right and titled left. Condition. Watercolour. Image size 9 inches by 8 inches approx. Vibrant colour. Excellent condition Housed in a 19th century gilt frame 20 by 18 inches, mounted behind glass. Albert Goodwin (1845-1932) was a notable English landscape painter specialising in watercolours. Goodwin was born in Maidstone in Kent, the son of a builder and one of 9 children. After leaving school he became an apprentice draper. His exceptional artistic ability was recognised at an early age and he went on to study with the pre-raphaelite artists Arthur Hughes and Ford Madox Brown - the latter predicting that he would become "one of the greatest landscape painters of the age". At the age of 15 his first painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy. He became an associate member of the Royal Watercolour Society (RWS) in 1876. He was championed by famed art critic John Ruskin who took him on a tour of Europe, where he made many sketches from nature which were later turned into watercolours. During his lifetime he travelled extensively throughout Britain and Europe, and visited many other countries. Goodwin was a prolific artist, producing over 800 works and continuing to paint well into his eighties. His wide variety of landscape subjects reflected his love of travel and show the influence of Turner, with whom he felt a strong affinity. In later works he developed experimental techniques such as using ink over water colour to achieve atmospheric lighting effects. His works are also an important record of social history
