David Smith RE was a Lowestoft born painter and print-maker. After serving in the Bomber Command during the Second World War, when he was also commissioned to sketch on bombing raids over Germany, he studied at the Slade School of Fine Art before taking up a teaching post at Chelsea School of Art. He is perhaps best known for his work as the official artist on board two British Antarctic surveys in 1975-1976 and again 1979-1980, Lord Shackleton crediting him as the finest recorder of the region in the twentieth century. His other notable commissions were for Trinity House, recording Lighthouses, and Sulzer Engineering in Switzerland.
