About the Item

Outgoing Fog Watercolor on paper, 1976 Signed by the artist lower left Painted in South Bristol, Maine Condition: Excellent Watercolor size: 15 x 22 7/8 inches Frame size: 20 x 30 inches (aprox.) Florian K. Lawton (1921-2011) Florian Kenneth Lawton made watercolors of regional Amish and sold them around the world. Professor Henry Adams of Case Western Reserve University wrote, "Florian Lawton had a gentle touch, and excelled in the rendering of subtle winter scenes. He also had special affinity for the Amish, whose customs appealed to his sense of enduring values, and his drawings and watercolors of Amish subjects are remarkable not only in visual terms but for their value as a cultural and historical record." Lawton was raised in Garfield Heights by a family without artists but showed early interest. He graduated from Garfield Heights High School, the Huntington Polytechnic Institute and what later became the Cleveland Institute of Art. During World War II, he made topographical maps in the Pacific for the Army Air Corps. He also decorated airplanes and tanks with pictures of scantily clad women. After the war he lived in Pepper Pike, Shaker Heights, Moreland Hills and Aurora. He made friends with Amish people in Geauga County, Holmes County and Pennsylvania. Some who shunned photographs let him depict them, and a few studied drawing with him. Lawton found many other subjects, from Cleveland streets to a quail hunt. His works belong to the White House, Fortune 500 companies, museums and more around the world. He also illustrated many local calendars and holiday cards, once depicting his bearded son, Kenneth, as Jesus. Lawton was listed in the Whos Who in American Art. He was a featured artist with Mill Pond Press, and a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, Pennsylvania Watercolor Society, Midwest Watercolor Society and Whiskey Painters of America, and the Akron Society of Artists. His awards numbered over 60, and he had an equal number of one man shows nationally.
