Artist Bio:
Frederick Ames Cushing (1934-2013) is the grandson of Howard Gardiner Cushing, who was a renowned portraitist. The Cushing Gallery at The Newport Art Museum was built in Howard Cushing’s memory; spearheaded by his good friend and fellow artist Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, who founded in 1931 the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City.
The Cushing Gallery in Newport houses a permanent collection of several portraits of his Howard’s wife: Ethel, as well as a number of decorative works, which occupied much of his later career.
Frederick A. Cushing graduated from Harvard and then worked in finance at J.P. Morgan Bank and then Lehman Brothers, including in their Paris office for eight years.
Fred’s favorite occupation in Newport was to capture, with his brushes the light bathing serene landscapes and seascapes in oil paintings. With no formal art training but constantly exposed to his grandfather’s work and surrounded by the exceptional beauty of Newport, it inspired him to try to capture these images in oil and watercolors.
In 2011 Fred A. Cushing had an exhibit with 30 of his paintings at the Isherwood Gallery, Newport, Rhode Island.
The Cushing family came to Newport in the mid 1860′s when Robert Cushing; the eldest son of J.P. Cushing the China Trader from Boston, bought a piece of land by the sea on which he built a summer house. This property: The Ledges is still occupied by his descendants today.

- Three Pyramids + Blue BallBy Alexander CalderLocated in Palm Desert, CA"Three Pyramids + Blue Ball" is a gouache on paper by Alexander Calder. The work is signed in the lower right, "Calder 73”. Although renowned for his innovative and groundbreaking sculptures, Alexander Calder started his artistic career as an abstract painter, preferring to use gouache. What is gouache? Gouache is a water-soluble paint – a type of opaque watercolor. As Calder returned to gouache painting towards the end of his life, he was now armed with a lifetime of experience as a sculptor. He explored the three-dimensional vocabulary of sculptural forms he had developed onto the two-dimensional surface of the paper. Certain shapes and colors recur throughout his gouaches and sculptures. Circles, ovals, and other geometric forms dominate the space. There is the same sense of energy and fluidity. The shapes do not sit on the surface but vibrate giving a feeling of movement in contrast to the static nature of painting. Like his sculpture, Calder’s gouache...Category
