He was a student of both Lecoq de Boisbaudran. He debuted at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1864, where he obtained a third class medal in 1874, a second class medal in 1880, and the Grand Prix at the Universal Exhibition of 1889. He was decorated with the Legion of Honor in 1884, promoted to officer by 1894, then commander by 1911, and elected member of the Institute by 1905. He commenced working with charcoal and his work revealed a deep feeling for nature. Then, once he moved on to canvases, the world discovered him a beautiful landscaper as well as a skillful draftsman. His works almost exclusively show scenes of rural life, but unlike Millet, whose influence is very present, he prefers the picturesque element to synthetic translation. He was an early adopter of “light painting” made fashionable by the research of the Impressionists.
