Reynolds Beal
Caribbean Island [untitled].

circa 1921.

About the Item

The location of this early oil pastel drawing was identified by other pieces from the same drawing book. The oil pastel was a new invention - just on the market in 1921 and it appears that Beal enjoyed working with the medium. This piece is a beautiful blend between his pencil drawings and oil paintings (which he developed from his drawings). Paper size 5 3/8 x 8 1/16" (13.8 x 20.5 cm). This piece is signed in pencil, lower left, but difficult to see as the artist then added color over the signature. REYNOLDS BEAL (1866-1951). Known as one of the early American Impressionists, Beal studied naval architecture at Cornell from 1885-1889. His formal art training would come later as he studied under William Merritt Chase at Chase's school in Shinnecock, Long Island in 1896. His love of yachting resulted in paintings of maritime scenes from around the world. Beal's first solo exhibition took place at the Clauson Gallery in New York City in 1905 and he would later become a founding member of the Society of Independent Artists in 1917. Reynolds Beal was one of the few Americans chosen to have their work exhibited at the Luxembourg Museum in Paris in 1919. Beal was a member of the Salmagundi Club, the American Watercolor Society, the Society of American Engravers, and the National Arts Club and in 1909 was elected an Associate Member of the National Academy of Design. He also founded the New Society of Artists, which consisted of fifty of the most influential painters of that time, among them, Childe Hassam, Maurice Prendergast, George Bellows, and William Glackens.
