  • House on the Hillside in the Trees - Watercolor on Paper
    By Emil Armin
    Located in Soquel, CA
Boldly colored watercolor landscape by Emil Armin (American/Rumanian, 1882-1972). A house with a bright red roof is nestled between some trees at the bottom of a hillside. The trees are depicted as large, voluminous shapes, giving them a solid presence in the composition. Signed "E. Armin '11" in the lower left corner. Presented in a wood frame with a mat. Frame size: 29"H x 33"W Image size: 18.75"H x 22.5"W Born in Rumania on April 1, 1883, Emil Armin studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago's evening classes under Dudley Crafts Watson, Randall Davey and George Bellows, then he graduated in 1920. Between 1922 and 1949 he exhibited his works at the Art Institute annuals and was involved in the No-Jury Society, organized in 1922. At that time he was immersed in Chicago's bohemian 57th Street Art Colony and he experimented with sculpture and decorative arts as a member of the Chicago Society of Artists. He taught at Chicago's Hull House (1925-26) and did cartoons full of angular forms and a particular method of shading and "zigzag outlining" taken from German Expressionist masters, for the Chicago Literary Times, a journal created by Maxwell Bodenheim and Ben Hecht. Samuel Putnam, a critic for the Chicago Evening Post (21 September 1926) regarded Armin as "perhaps the most finely sensitized artist in Chicago . . . with the soul of a peasant and the mind of a philosopher." In 1928 Armin traveled to New Mexico where he executed a naïve, child-like woodcut, Mountain Farm, Santa Fe (Art Institute). Chicago critic Bulliet's characterization of Armin as a "primitive" in impulses, "though sophisticated and intelligent" applies here: "His work resembles somewhat the peasant art...

  • "Monument Valley Arizona" - Desert Landscape
    Located in Soquel, CA
Detailed watercolor of Monument Valley by Albert DeRome (American, 1885-1959). The viewer is looking out over the valley from a high vantage point, with towering mesas in the distance. In the foreground, there are some shrubs and a small tree to the right side of the composition. DeRome has created a sense of vast distance by rendering the far background with a hazy quality while keeping the foreground in clear focus. Signed "Albert DeRome" in the lower right corner. Inscription on verso as a gift to the artist's mother. Purchased from the estate of the artist Patterson's Antiques, Los Gatos. Presented in a wood frame with a new white mat. Image size: 5.75"H x 8"W Frame size: 11"H x 14"W Born in Cayucos, California, Albert De Rome (American, 1885-1959) became a California landscape painter, especially of natural landscapes formations, seascapes and marine scenes near Carmel and Monterey. Usually his palette was bright in both oil and watercolor, but he did the occasional nocturne. Scholars have compared his painting style and subjects to those of Thomas Hill and Albert Bierstadt. However, Albert De Rome never affiliated with any formal group of painters, although he had many close friends including Percy Gray, Gunnar Widforss and Will Sparks. As a young man, Thomas De Rome worked at the Congress Spring Hotel in Saratoga, and in San Francisco at the Globe Foundry, owned by an uncle. He studied art under Arthur Mathews, John Stanton and Lorenzo Latimer...

Signed lower left, 'J. W. Nicoll' for John W. Nicoll (American, 1865-1943), titled lower left, 'Santa Barbara' and painted circa 1925. Sheet dimensions: 9 x 12.75 inches. A luminous, early twentieth-century landscape showing a picturesque view of a Spanish style cottage set in a lush garden with a view beyond towards the Santa Ynez Mountains rising towards clouded, blue skies. He then continued on to Seville where he studied for three years at the Academia Real, spending his winters traveling and painting in North Africa. By 1899, Nicoll had settled in Pasadena where he painted, exhibited and taught drawing at the College of Fine Arts from 1906-1935. Upon his retirement, he moved to San Diego where he continued to paint and exhibit until his death in 1943.
