About the Item
'On the Path', pastel and ink on art paper, by Suzanne Tourte (circa 1950s). Executed with a lively palette of colour, this is a surprisingly sophisticated modern work of art which belies its rather naive style. Flowered fields, green grassy patches, a curved path and blue skies all figure in this engaging landscape with two figures. Newly framed and glazed in anti-reflective glass, this work is in good overall condition. Signed: 'S X Tourte' in the lower right hand. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying the listing. Upon request, a video may be provided.
About the Artist: Suzanne Tourte (1904-1979) was a French painter, engraver, medalist, fresco artist, lithographer and illustrator. She was also an excellent vocalist. She studied at the school of Beaux-Arts in Reims while continuing her musical studies at the Conservatoire de la Ville. She chose painting as a profession and returned to Paris to continue her studies. She was friends with artists Yves Brayer and Robert Humblot (both of whose paintings are held by this gallery). Suzanne Tourte began her career as a landscape painter and made numerous trips abroad to further her art, the first was to Germany. She painted with a very personal style, filled with energy yet faithful to realism. In 1932, the artist received the Florence-Blumenthal Foundation Prize. In 1940, she changed her signature by adding an X before her name in order to preserve the memory of her friend, Xavier. During this artistic period, Tourte moved further and further away from the faithful representation of realism and depicted her subjects using acute angles and geometric planes. She acquired international renown after her exhibition in Amsterdam in 1952. Around 1954, she returned to a stylistic expression closer to realism, with a more sober, serene palette. Later in her life she was awarded the French Legion of Honour. In 1980, an exhibition of her work was presented in the Grand Palais in Paris. Her works are now held in many private and public collections, most notably at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Musée du Petit Palais and the Musée Carnavalet, as well as in museums in Boston, New York (the MET), Prague and Warsaw.
