Thorald Læssøe
19th Century Danish Drawing and Watercolour Study of a Tree at Indelluket

1840s

About the Item

Mid 19th Century watercolour drawing and watercolour study of a tree by noted Danish artist Thorald Læssøe. The work is monogram signed bottom left and there is an annotation in the artist hand bottom right. To the back of the drawing there is another superb architectural rendering of Frederiksborg Castle by the same artist (see last photo). The drawing is currently framed between two sheets of glass in a period wood frame which bares the artists name and the date to the back. There is also an annotation giving the titles and locations of the two drawings. A charming and superbly executed study of a tree in leaf. Læssøe has achieved a wonderful feeling of the presence and grandeur of the tree in his drawing, beautifully observed, the whole softened by his use of vibrant green 'lavis' for the leaves and foliage. Thorald Læssøe was a Danish painter who specialized in observational and landscape paintings. He was a student of Christian Holm and Christen Købke, and his works were influenced by J.Th. Lundbye and P.C. Skovgaard. He travelled and lived extensively in Italy and captured many of the famous buildings and landmarks of the 'Grand Tour'. The drawing to the rear of the paper is an architectural rendering of Frederiksborg Castle. This is a palatial complex in Hillerød, Denmark. It was built as a royal residence for King Christian IV of Denmark-Norway in the early 17th century, replacing an older castle acquired by Frederick II and becoming the largest Renaissance residence in Scandinavia. On three islets in the Slotssøen (castle lake), it is adjoined by a large formal garden in the Baroque style. Læssøe's paintings and drawings are held in major private and national collections worldwide including the Metropolitan Museum of Art New York.

  • Sail vs Steam, 19th Century French Marine Drawing
    By Georges Ricard-Cordingley
    Located in Cotignac, FR
Late 19th century drawing on paper of a French marine scene by noted French artist Georges Ricard-Cordingley. Carrying the atelier stamp to the bottom right, presented in modern black frame. Provenance: This drawing came from the estate of the artist's daughter who had acquired it directly from her father. It is from his earliest period of drawing when his talents were first being recognised. A charming drawing capturing the scene of a steam tug docked next to a larger sailing boat, the scene probably at Boulogne sur Mer. Cordingley has captured the majesty of the scene, the juxtaposition of old and new technologies. It probably dates from his earliest period when he was showing prodigious talent in his early teens. Georges Ricard was born on January 30, 1873 in Lyon, son of Prosper Louis Ricard and Georgina Marie Cordingley. He spent part of his childhood in Lyon and Boulogne-sur-Mer. He displayed early gifts for drawing. He lost his father in 1885. He began his training around 1887, becoming a pupil of Jean-Charles Cazin, a landscape painter from Pas-de-Calais and the Côte d'Opale. He then joined the School of Fine Arts in Lyon and remained there from 1888 to 1889. He moved to Paris in 1890, where he studied at the Académie Julian as a pupil of Benjamin Constant, Louis Martinet and Jules Lefebvre. He lost his mother around 1892, went to England to his maternal family and added his mother's name to his name. He embarked for the North Sea with the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen and carried out his first studies. In 1894, he met with great success at the court of Queen Victoria. He embarked a second time, in 1895, still for the North Sea and produced numerous studies of waves of clouds, of the port and of portraits of fishermen...

Christina Haglid One Potato watercolor and gouache on paper 4.50h x 2.50w in 11.43h x 6.35w cm Artist's Statement Tiny Sanctuaries There has always been an intersection between the process of writing and the act of painting in my work. It has somehow been my guide. In the last four years, during the making of this work, that connection intensified as I started writing short stories and flash fiction while taking online classes. I find the process of writing and painting so different in almost every way, but there is something freeing and generative in writing which helps my painting process. Or perhaps it's a reminder of what painting is for me - something intuitive that needs to be trusted. And what they do have in common is a desire to encapsulate and distill a single moment, a story, about the complexity of our emotions and experiences. At the heart of my work is the recurring depiction of perseverance, strength of will, and a subtle optimism. Symbolically through the objects, precarious situations depict a moment of possible difficulty, often involving the influence of nature. A paper crane left in the snow. A boat nearly filled to the brim, but not submerged and able to drain its own contents carefully. A slide alone at night which will return to its purpose during the day. My intention is to not show the failure because I imagine all these objects make it through to better times. Allegories of survival. Someone comes by and finds the paper crane, the rowboat owners return and see their boat undisturbed, and the slide during the day brings joy.
