About the Item

An atmospheric, cabinet-sized, gouache seascape showing pale yellow and rose light over ebbing blue-green waters. Signed lower left, 'Walter Kuhlman' (American, 1918-2009) and dated 1982. This member of the Minnesota Art Association and the Sausalito Six, was elected to the National Academy of Design in 1995, and his papers were later accepted into the Smithsonian Institute's Archives of American Art. San Francisco Bay Area painter and printmaker, Walter Egel Kuhlman was a pioneer of the San Francisco School of Abstract Expressionism, which emerged in the late 1940s and flourished through the 1950s. Kuhlman studied at St. Paul School of Art, Minnesota and the University of Minnesota, where he received his B.A. in 1941. Kuhlman exhibiteed at New York's World Fair and taught at the St. Paul School of Art. Upon returning from the Navy, Kuhlman studied at Tulane University, New Orleans, before his acceptance into the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco (1947-1950). Says Kuhlman: "Working at the CSFA [California School of Fine Arts, now known as the San Francisco Art Institute] turned our lives from unbearable tension and anxiety to an almost unbelievable enthusiasm. We worked hard. Played hard. Drank lots of wine. Listened to great jazz and poetry. My constant companions during these years were Frank Lobdell, Richard Diebenkorn, Budd Dixon, Jack Jefferson, John Hultberg and Peter Shoemaker." In 1950, Kuhlman and Lobdell finished the last year of their G.I. benefits in Paris where they shared a studio at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere. In 1951, they exhibited their work in the celebrated "Salon de Mai" show at the Petit Palais - the first American Abstract Expressionist paintings shown. After being awarded the Graham Fellowship Prize (1957), Kuhlman began his teaching career, where he taught at the California School of Fine Arts (1957-1960); University California, Berkeley, (summer, 1959); University of New Mexico, Albuquerque (1960-1965); Stanford University (1966-1967); University of Santa Clara (1967-1969) and Sonoma State University (1969-1988). In 1982, the California Arts Council named Kuhlman an "Outstanding Artist and Teacher" and was the recipient of the Maestro Grant. Kuhlman's work may be found in the permanent collections of institutions around the world, including the British Museum, Cleveland Museum of Art, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Menil Collection, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Oakland Museum of California, Phillips Memorial Gallery (Washington, D.C.), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Smithsonian Museum of American Art, the Brazil Museum of Modern Art and Worcester Museum of Art.
