About the Item

When We Work Together, 2020 30" x 30" Abstract Figurative Mixed Media Acrylic and Pencil on Paper Signed Allison Meyler is a contemporary painter, with a love for color, pattern, and bold gestural drawing that is apparent throughout her work. Over the last ten years, Allison has worked in several main series: abstract, faces, figures, nudes and bar art. Regardless of the subject matter, Allison’s process remains constant. She works in layers of different media, often starting with a simple but bold sketch for structure and then adding different elements such as acrylic paint, oil pastel, spray paint, acrylic ink, colored pencil, collage and RIT dye on hand washed and fringed linen. A Maine native, Allison graduated from Wellesley College where she dual-majored in Studio Art + Art History. While in college, Allison spent a semester abroad in Rome, Italy at the Tyler School of Art. She has continued her “art education” as an adult, taking multiple printmaking and painting classes as well as leading painting workshops through the Education Department at the Aldrich Museum in Ridgefield, CT. Allison’s work is available for sale via the Serena & Lily online Art Collection as well as through many interior designers and design shops throughout the northeast. Her work has been exhibited in many shows in New England, and is in the homes of many collectors across the US.

Chicken Sandwiches 40" x 30" Abstract Figurative Mixed Media Works on Paper Signed *This work is may also available matte and framed for $2400* "My figurative work started as a challenge to myself. Sometimes, when I’m stuck in a painting rut, I challenge myself to do the one thing I least could imagine myself doing, let alone well. So that is how the figures started. My process often starts with a simple line drawing, and then I add layer after layer, incorporating unusual color combinations of acrylic paint, spray paint, oil pastels and colored pencils. I often go back and forth between some type of drawing and painting. And, I like to explore using different media like stencils and collage as well." ~Allison Meyler Allison Meyler is a contemporary painter, with a love for color, pattern, and bold gestural drawing that is apparent throughout her work. • Francis Newton Souza, Indian 20th Century artist, nude abstract drawing
    By Francis Newton Souza
    Located in Petworth, West Sussex
Francis Newton Souza (Indian, 1924 – 2002) Odalisque Pen on paper 15.3/4 x 9.7/8 in. (40 x 25 cm.) Provenance: The artist’s wife Maria, Nee Figueiredo, gifted to her nephew We have 5 other similar examples by this artist all of the same size. Please go to Ottocento's storefront on 1st dibs for further information. These examples were saved from being burnt on a bonfire by the artist’s nephew. Maria, Souza’ wife was sick and tired of Souza’s affairs and was burning many of his studies in the garden when her nephew intervened. These studies are from those. Others saved at the same time were executed in 1952 and is highly likely that these are from the same period. Layered, dynamic, brutally humanistic, the paintings of Francis Newton Souza reveal an artist who never stopped experimenting throughout his six-decade career, perpetually seeking new modes and languages of painterly expression. A founder of the inestimably important Progressive Artists’ Group in Mumbai, he wrote the group’s manifesto and was a crucial intellect in the group’s formation and articulation—as, indeed, he was for Modern Indian art on the whole. He holds an unshakable place among India’s most important and influential Modern painters. Despite the vast sweep of painting styles encompassed by his oeuvre, Souza’s work is unified by an overt sensuality, sometimes violent, sometimes sexual, but devoted above all to the human body as a wild, fragile, noble and corruptible object. He is hardly the first Catholic-raised artist to fixate on the body. Nudes...
