About the Item

Nude portrait in pencil and heightened white on paper signed lower right. 7in x 10in Félix Edouard Vallotton (Swiss, 1865–1925) was a painter and printmaker associated with Les Nabis. In 1882, he moved to Paris to study art under Jules Joseph Lefebvre and Gustave Boulanger at the Académie Julian. Initially producing portraits grounded in the academic tradition, Vallotton was inspired by the classical works he observed at the Louvre, by artists such as Hans Holbein, Albrecht Dürer and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. Up to around 1900, Vallotton went through an analytical phase, attempting to reproduce the surrounding world with great precision. In the six years from 1891 to 1898, he concentrated more on etchings, lithography and engravings than on paintings. The subject matter and atmosphere ranged widely: scenes from private life, street scenes, black humour, satire. Confined by costs to reproduction in black and white, he achieved in the best examples an interplay of jagged and contrasting dots from which life sprang forth vigorously. Among his series of engravings is Intimités, published in La Revue Blanche. From around 1898 onwards, he increasingly focused on painting, aiming to create a figuration based on sculptural values and concentrating on the female body. He gradually abandoned direct painting in the open air to return to the studio, where he sought to reconstruct the outdoor environment from memory and the jottings he accumulated in his notebooks, intending thereby to eliminate the trivial and contingent. Vallotton's work appeared in collective exhibitions including: Salon des Artistes Français, Paris (from 1885); Galerie Bernheim Jeune, Paris, with the Nabis (1894, 1900); Galerie Vollard, Paris, with the Nabis (1897); Galerie Durand-Ruel, Paris, with the Nabis (1899); the Viennese Secession (1903); the Salon d'Automne in Paris (1903); with the Toison d'Or group in Moscow (1908); Salon Izdebsky, Odessa, Kiev, St Petersburg and Riga (1909, 1910); the Centennial Exhibition at the French Institute in St Petersburg (1912); and posthumously at an exhibition of French painting in Moscow (1928). He has featured regularly in other more recent collective exhibitions, such as Paris-Moscow at the Pompidou Centre in Paris (1979), and a Nabis exhibition at the Galerie Nationale du Grand Palais (1993).
