Born in Grenoble, Léon-Ernest Drivier entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1895 in the studio of the sculptor Louis-Ernest Barrias. He began his career as a practitioner in Auguste Rodin's studio, working alongside other sculptors who soon came to be known as the Bande à Schnegg. In their quest for a new aesthetic, they combined the expressionist force inherited from the master with the fundamentals of classical sculpture from antiquity and the Renaissance.
A founding member of the Salon des Indépendants in 1923, Léon-Ernest Drivier received numerous public and private commissions for monumental works and large-scale decors. He was commissioned by the French government to create a gilded bronze sculpture of Athena for the Musée des Colonies, inaugurated in 1931 (now the Palais de la Porte Dorée in Paris). In 1937, to mark the Universal Exhibition, he created a group sculpted in the round, La Joie de vivre, now in the Trocadéro gardens, as well as two nymphs on the esplanade of the Palais de Tokyo. He also received several commissions from the Argentinian authorities, who drew on Rodin's preferred practitioners.
Léon-Ernest Drivier was part of the modern figurative movement of the 1920s and 30s, which embraced its classical heritage. He concentrated on the human figure, giving pride of place to simplicity. Anxious to achieve an ideal of simplicity, he formulated an artistic proposal based on the purification of volumes.
