About the Item

SALE ONE WEEK ONLY "Portrait Study" is a well-detailed portrait study of an older nude man. It is signed and dated by the artist. Michael Hodges has written about Robert Schefman for the Detroit News stating: “He explores ideas in a black-bound sketchbook, its pages filled with loose black-and-white drawings with a beauty all their own. Schefman, a Michigan State University grad who got his master's at the University of Iowa in sculpture, not painting, says he might work an image dozens of times till he finds the right iteration. When he does, he signs it.” Robert Schefman, a native of Detroit, Michigan, earned a BFA in Sculpture from Michigan State University in 1974, an MA in Sculpture from the University of Iowa in 1976, and an MFA from the University of Iowa in 2006. Schefman lived and worked in New York City for thirteen years. He returned to the Detroit area in 1989. He is currently Professor Emeritous at College for Creative Studies. College for Creative Studies (formerly Center for Creative Studies) faculty and graduates include Richard Jerzy, Harry Bertoia, Doug Chaing (currently director of Lucas Film), Stephen Dinehart (game maker, writer, designer connected with The David Lynch Foundation), Tyree Guyton (international artist), Herb Babcock, Jerome Feretti, Kevin Siembieda (writer, designer and publisher of role-playing games), Renee Radell, Philip Pearlstein, Charles McGee (nationally recognized African American sculptor of animal and dancing spirits), Philip Pearlstein (2000 Honorary Doctorate, Modern Realism style), John Louis Krieger (American Modern), William Girard (American Modern), Charles Culver, Henry Heading, and Hughie Lee-Smith (African-American artist of surreal landscape.) His solo exhibitions have been held at the U.N. Plaza, New York City; Aesthetic Arrest, New York City; Lemberg Gallery, Birmingham; Robert Kidd Gallery, Birmingham; The Birmingham/Bloomfield Art Center;Midland Center For The Arts, The Charach Epstein Museum, West Bloomfield, The Krasl Art Center, St. Joseph, MI, and Meadow Brook Gallery, Oakland University, Rochester, MI. Group exhibitions include: Ruggiero/Henis Gallery, New York City; The Brooklyn Army Terminal, New York City; Wards Island, New York City; Foley Square/ Federal Plaza, New York City; Struve Gallery, Chicago; Robert Berman Gallery, Santa MonicaL; Robert Kidd Gallery, Lemberg Gallery, Detroit Artisits Market and The Detroit Institute of Arts. Robert has been awarded grants from the Pollack-Krasner Foundation, The Benard Maas Foundation, The Arts Foundation of Michigan, The State of Michigan Creative Artist Grant and The University of Iowa Graduate Senate. His works are in the collections of The Detroit Institute of Arts; The 19th District Court, Dearborn; Ford Arts Center, Dearborn; Wayne State University, Detroit; The Cooley Law School, Lansing; The University of Iowa as well as in private collections in Detroit, New York City, Boca Raton, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.
